5.0 out of 5 stars Great for a European vacation May 14 2008
By Pat Galant - Published on Amazon.com
I purchased Frommer's German PhraseFinder & Dictionary (Frommer's Phrase Books) in preparation for a trip to Germany and it came in handy on a few occasions. I already knew some German so I didn't need to rely on the book all the time, but it was a nice reference for when I needed to recall a specific phrase before I did business. The food and menu reader sections were great. I think it would be a little difficult to carry this in a pocket and use it at the same time trying to speak to someone because that would take a lot of time. In addition, most of the Germans under 40 that I met spoke some English. In the cities, hotels and large restaurants English is common. I camped at campgrounds and found that they had someone on staff that spoke German. So, it's easy to communicate there without the book, but it's a great way to brush up on important phrases before the trip and while in the plane or train.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good in its style Jun 8 2008

I've accumulated a small libray of these mini-phrasebook/dictionaries in different languages. If you don't know a word of the language I'm not sure how useful they are. This Frommer German is one of the best for "re-invigorating" your travel & daily events vocabulary at least if you have some background. A great refresher and seems to really boost your vocabulary in a useful way. Plus good sections on foods, etc, which you are more likely to use as a real dictionary. If you don't know the language at all something like a Michel Thomas beginner CD course would be helpful.
5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great little phrase finder! Mar 29 2010

Although it is incomplete (in my opinion), this Dictionary was pretty helpful when i was looking for common phrases and words. However, i think that, if it were up to me, i would have done it a little different. Dont expect this to be a life saver or anything. Ultimately, you just have to be a student of the language while you are there.
