FUBAR unapologetically glorifies the pair's relentless and frequently reckless pursuit of a good buzz, loud rock, and chicks, from a front-porch bull session that leads to a hilarious vandalism spree to a camping trip where everything that's not bolted down gets tossed on a gas-fuelled bonfire. The rough, hand-held camera work and choppy editing of producer-director-cowriter Michael Dowse perfectly capture Terry and Dean's frenetic spontaneity as they stumble from one ridiculous misadventure to the next. Spence and Lawrence share writing credit, and the characters they become are pure genius--sort of updated, heavy metal versions of Bob and Doug McKenzie. Fans of Spinal Tap, American Movie, and Dazed and Confused should not miss this. --Adem Tepedelen

More Cheers, More Beers - That's it, that's all,
By The Son of Dad (Calgary, Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fubar (DVD)
FUBAR is by far the funniest movie I have seen in a long, long time. The film chronicals the seemingly mundane expoits of Terry Cahill and Dean Murdoch, two idiotic headbangers whose existance apparently is based on shot-gunning Pilsner, swearing, and just given'er. Documentary film director Farrel Mitchner follows our heros into the depths of a world most of us could never dream of. I especially loved the scene where they party in High River, where you can't tell who's an actor and who isn't. The locals certainly fit right in with Terry and Dean. What is surprising to me is that it has taken this long for an authoritative film on Headbangers to be made. Chances are you went to high school with guys like this and this movie shows you what they're probably up to post-graduation, if they made it that far. This movie won't make you stop and think, nor will it make you question your place in the world. It will however give you one of the best laughs you've had in a long time. The DVD has some great extra features and I especially enjoyed the director's commentary and deleted scenes. It's well worth owning as you will want to watch it over and over. Best line: "As it stands right now, plan B is just to keep on given'er."

This review is from: Fubar [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Just in time for the release of Fubar II, here comes the original classic on blu-ray!Ferrell Mitchner, an amature filmaker, has decided to take a look at two locals who live the party life fast and hard. Terry and Dean are two headbangers in Calgary Alberta, who live to shotgun beers and avoid getting a real job. However all is not well in Calgary. Terry and Deaner's "party leader", Tron (Troy) has found love and snubbed them. In the midst of all this, Ferrell discovers that Dean is hiding a serious case of testicular cancer. He is in serious denial over the seriousness of this condition, but the pain is becoming harder to ignore. Only Terry knows, and Dean has not told Trixie, the mother of his only child Chastity. When Ferrell tells her what is happening, Trixie is shocked. Furious, Trixie demands that Dean not leave Chastity without a dad, and go to the hospital. Dr. S.C. Lim informs Dean that the only solution is surgical, and there are no guarantees. Terry and Dean decide to take Ferrell and the camera crew camping to celebrate Dean's last weekend before surgery. Packing a cooler full of beers and chocolate bars, the boys are ready. However, they are not ready to face mortality, and certainly not the mortality of someone unexpected. While this description certainly does not sound funny, it is the lovable but dense Terry and Dean who make this comedy work. Eternally quotable, Fubar will have you in stitches from the opening credits to the end. "I suggest you try another sport! Like knitting!" "Even though he cast some nasty f****n' s**t, Merlin went to Heaven. That stuff's real. Merlin was in King Henry's court!" "Some of the best burgers I've ever had came from bowling alleys. Bowling alleys have some of the best cooks. Just because they work at a bowling alley, doesn't mean they're not gonna put some pride in their burgers." "I can't just sit here and nurse my giant nut." The fact is, anybody who grew up in the 80's knew somebody just like Terry and Dean. Dumb, but lovable and loyal, finding amusement in the simplest activities like jumping fences and play fighting, Terry and Dean are not unlike that guy down the street who wore his jean jacket even on the hottest summer days. Along the way, they encouter real Albertans like themselves, guys who drink hard and party hard all weekend, waking at the crack of noon to do it all over again. While some would like to live in denial that such people exist, it is the truth. This is a true Canadian cult classic. It is a comedy with a real heart beating inside. Most importantly, it is only the beginning. I can't wait to see what adventures Terry and Deaner are up to when they move to Fort McMurray in Fubar II! Bonus features are extremely high quality, with deleted scenes that should have made the final cut, and some hilarious commentary tracks. Five stars.
