Definitely not the most budget-conscious purchase out there, but this is one of those situations where "you get what you pay for". Scan quality is exceptional (both color document and photos and black-and-white text with OCR - this printer handles PDFs like it was made for it; and to be honest it probably was made for it - there is even an Adobe PDF logo on its front bezel). Comes with a number of preset modes - photo scanning, document scanning, OCR, business cards, scan-to-folder, etc. I have tried all of them, as well as some custom settings (scan one side or both, higher/lower resolution) and they all work great, albeit photo scanning in highest quality mode can be a little slow, especially in USB-only mode. Only problem I noticed is that sometimes it will have a problem feeding smaller pieces of paper in, turning them slightly - but the software adjusts for it and straightens the scanned image when it's done. Also at times it does not correctly detect empty pages, especially if they are wrinkled. Oh, and it's a lot smaller than I thought it would be - in its folded state it's about the size of a carton of cigarettes, and looks very unassuming on the desk behind the laptop. Can even easily be packed with you when you travel
