Product Description

Review

"The book has a simple premise: If you are smart enough to be a professional fund raiser, you're smart enough to learn to properly use the software. Connors' work has a 3-fold purpose: to enable the professional to work with database staff to meet objectives with the least possible confusion and stress; to familiarize the professional with the parts of the database that it is necessary to master, in order to best utilize it; and, finally, to enable the organization's staff to set up, maintain, and maximize the database's usefulness. The fact that Connors meets these objectives in a concise and readable manner makes this book a "must-have" for every professional fundraiser." (SanFranciscoBookReview, June 2010)

The book mentioned many areas that were not familiar to me, although I have used the program for gift processing widely. The book was mainly for collaborating with fundraisers to set up the program properly. There was an absence of technical jargon, so it was a good starting point to consult the Blackbaud manual for more detail.

So that's what all the buzz is about! Feb. 28 2010
By California Vegan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I have been a development professional for over a decade and during that time I have heard countless testimonies declaring Raiser's Edge as the top application of its type. So, I was thrilled when, three years ago, I became Director of Development for a prominent private school that used Raiser's Edge as its donor database.

Suddenly, I found myself overwhelmed by a complicated tool that I just could not get a handle on. I have taken trainings and bought several manuals but all they do is emphasize how much I don't know about RE. I have become totally dependent on my database manager for nearly all tasks involving RE. I have taken to keeping a dozen different spreadsheets for the information I use most often.

I am about half way through this book and have already learned more about RE than I have in the past three years. It has all started to click. The definitions in the book are clear, the examples are simple and the language is English, not Tech-ish.

Information comes in bite-size pieces that are easy to digest. It won't teach you how to be an RE geek but it will help you to understand what the geeks are talking about. I wish I had read this book three years ago.

Finally! A User-Friendly Guide to RE! Feb. 26 2010
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I am a Raiser's Edge administrator and I LOVE this book! Not just for myself but for my co-workers. One of the biggest challenges I face is helping my colleagues communicate exactly what they need when asking for reports or queries.

This book explains, in plain English, everything a non-technical RE user needs to optimize their interaction with this most useful fundraising tool. It simplifies The Raiser's Edge so that any level user can express their wants and needs in producing reports and list.

For the RE professional this book is an invaluable tool by which to interface with your colleagues. For the more casual user, it is an easy-read that will empower you to bring your fundraising to a new level.

A "must have" for any organization that uses The Raiser's Edge.

Hooray! Dec 29 2010
By Carol Troese - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Finally, there is a book that explains Raiser's Edge that can be understood!! I was plunked into a position where I had to learn the Raisers' Edge without prior experience with the database. While I understood the basics of fundraising, I had never before been confronted with a database that was so confounding. Connors puts the database into layman's terms. Even without the step-by-step of a how-to guide that I was hoping for Connors language is so clear that I was easily able to figure out the "how-to" part on my own. Kudos to Mr. Connors!!
Must Buy for Any RE User March 31 2010
By Kira Christie - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I am a Database Administrator, but have just been using RE for about 2 years and am mostly self taught. This is exactly what I have been looking for! Blackbaud and other trainers can give you the nitty gritty of how to do certain tasks, but this book is a necessary compliment to that training. It has become my new reference tool for policy and business rule related concepts as well as a go-to source to explain the structure and pitfalls of RE to leadership. The book has helped elucidate concepts I've struggled with and provided depth and reassurance to problems I've faced in RE, from database clean-up to setting up reporting structures that avoid the "fruit bowl" phenomenon.
The Raiser's Edge resource we've all been waiting for! March 17 2010

I cannot speak highly enough of Bill Connors or his fantastic new book. This is truly an incredible resource that every development professional using Raiser's Edge should read early and often! Bill delivers expert thinking and strategy, industry best practices for data management and ways for making Raiser's Edge work for you - and all in an easily digested and dare-I-say FUN package! This is helpful, informative, creative, clear and invaluable to any development professional or database administrator. It perfectly marries systems with good development practices. I have yet to find anything of this caliber or scope in field. Bravo and THANK YOU!
