Like the Supremes, En Vogue were the perfect mixture of fabrication and fabulousness. On their blockbuster second CD, the four women set the standards for female black pop. Blessed with killer vocals and a sizzling set of songs that married funk, rock, and slinky soul, Funky Divas remains the career highlight of a "girl group" that transcends the label. --Amy Linden

4.0 out of 5 stars Funky Divas: En Vogue at their best Jun 25 2004
Format:Audio CD
En Vogue's Funky Divas is a great album. I gave the album 4 out of 5 stars because I don't like every song on the CD, but the songs I do like, I really like.

En Vogue shows their amazing vocal range, and their impressive harmonizing. The album is very R&B. It includes 1970's remakes "Hooked on Your Love", "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", and "Yesterday", which they did a great job covering.

I liked the ad libs these ladies included on the album which include preparing to go onstage and talking to each other about relationships.

The songs that were released from the album were some of the best. "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", "Free Your Mind", " "Yesderday" and "Never Gonna Get It" were all releases and are all songs that help make Funky Divas a must have for R&B lovers.

THE BEST ON THE CD
Hooked On Your Love
Giving Him Something He Can Feel
Yesterday
Give it Up, Turn It Loose
This is Your Life

THE WORST ON THE CD
Desire

It Ain't Over Til the Fat Lady Sings

5.0 out of 5 stars En Vogue's Crowning Achievement! Jun 11 2004
Format:Audio CD
When we first heard En Vogue in 1990, they were on a mission to revive the all-important girl group. This, coinciding with pop's gradual acceptance for new jack swing, ushered in their brilliant debut. They did this by combining sass, beauty, class, and vocal ability into their appearance and music. Almost two years later, the Oakland quartet combined these elements again on their sophomore effort. This time, they received much more favorable pop acceptance and in the process, generated one of the best pop/R&B albums of 1992.

Funky Divas reeled off no more than FIVE huge hits ("My Lovin", "Free Your Mind", "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", "Give It Up, Turn It Loose", "Love Don't Love You"), with a couple album tracks being dance specialities. Additionally, there is not one filler track, as from beginning to end, this set is simply stellar. Noteworthy tracks include the great opener "This Is Your Life", the Marley Marl-produced "It Aint Over Til the Fat Lady Sings", and the sultry-driven "Desire".

Overall, this album stands as one of the 1990's definitive albums. It combined rock, jazz, hip-hop, soul, and new jack swing into a flawless masterpiece. It would also be the quartet's most successful set, and is the last full album where the original members are present. That was unfortunate, as En Vogue's popularity started to wane quickly after the first group member left. Nevertheless, for its commercial attention and array of sounds, it is one of the best Pop/R&B albums of all-time, and should be in any music lover's collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars FUNKY ENCICLOPEDIA GREAT! Oct 13 2003
Format:Audio CD
En Vogue's Funky Divas is classic album, not only for the great pop tunes that where spread around the world, but for the words that they state, the albums goes around talking about respect, freedom, pleasures, etc., but after all, love, of course in a funky way. The best tracks that will put your feet on their stomping way will be the respectful song "My Lovin'", never never gonna get it!, the rock joint about freedom: "Free Your Mind" and the rest will follow!, the jazzy-dance opening song: "This Is Your Life" live it your own way!, the hip-hop-doo-wop: "Hip Hop Lover" kind of a silly lyrics but still great song with early 90's rappers. Two total anthems of the 90's dance songs "Ain't It Over Till The Fat Lady Sings", "What Is Love", the next a pop-r&b joint with great vocals: "Love Don't Love You". The softies are surrounded by a 70's groove with the remake of Aretha's "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", the Beatles "Yesterday". Other tracks are just fillers that is not worth it mention it them, the closure of this funky album is the intimate Prayer for all the blessing they receive. This album is worth the try, and today I consider it a classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Free Your Behind
Funky Divas indeed, En Vogue make pretty standard chick hip hop, but their singing is about as good as their dancing, so this is about as good as it gets for this genre. Read more
