Matt Groening's second season of the 31st century sci-fi sitcom Futurama maintained the high scripting standards of the first and also well brought improved digital animation. Couch potato Fry now seems thoroughly reconciled to his new existence, transported 10 centuries hence to "New New York" and working for Professor Farmsworth's delivery service. He's surrounded by a cast of freaks, including the bitchily cute Amy (with whom he has a romantic brush) and Hermes, the West Indian bureaucrat. Most sympathetic is the one-eyed Leela (voiced by Katey Segal). Like Lisa Simpson, she is brilliant but unappreciated; she finds solace in her pet Nibbler, a tiny creature with a voracious, carnivorous appetite. By contrast, Bender, the robot, is programmed with every human vice, a sort of metal Homer Simpson with a malevolent streak.

In one of the best episodes, Bender is given a "feelings" chip in order to empathize with Leela after he flushes Nibbler down the toilet. Elsewhere, Fry falls in love with a mermaid when the team discover the lost city of Atlanta, Fry and Bender end up going to war after they join the army to get a discount on gum, and John Goodman guest stars as Santa Claus, an eight-foot gun-toting robot. Brimful with blink-and-you'll-miss-them hip jokes (such as the sign for the Taco Bellevue hospital) and political and pop satire, Futurama isn't a stern warning of things to come but rather, as the makers put it, "a brilliant, hilarious reflection of our own materially (ridiculously) overdeveloped but morally underdeveloped society." --David Stubbs

5.0 out of 5 stars Volume Two: The Most Consistent, Jun 16 2004
This review is from: Futurama: Volume 2 (DVD)
While Volumes Three and Four of Futurama contain most of the all-time great episodes (along with some of the worst as well), I believe Volume Two to be the most consistently good. "Anthology of Interest I," "War is the H-Word," "Put Your Head on My Shoulders," "X-Mas Story", and "A Head in the Polls" are among the best, with Dr. Zoidberg's "Why Must I Be A Crustacean in Love?" possibly being the funniest (if you like Zoidberg). Overall, it's pretty hard to find a poorly done piece, and almost every episode has enough good points to watch it over again. The only problem is, while all of this stuff is good, it's rarely "great." After all, it is the later episodes that become both funnier and more emotionally rendered, and here everything is simply well-done. This is NOT a bad point, however, because the quality of this Volume is amazing. Again, almost EVERY episode here is good. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a Fantastic Addition to any fan of these type of shows, Aug 3 2003
This review is from: Futurama: Volume 2 (DVD)
Simpsons, Family Guy, King of the Hill, Futurama. These 4 "Adult" Cartoon shows broadcast by Fox are all great in their own way. Sadly Family Guy and Futurama, which i thought could have even beat the Simpsons were cancelled after only a short run. I don't know what fox was thinking but Family Guy never really got established. Back to Futrama however, unlike the Simpsons, it's first season, since it was started by Matt Groening in about 1999, had highly polished and well done animation. Also unlike the simpsons, its animation hasnt changed drastically which I think is fine cause it's really great. The first season was awesome, the only drawback was its 13 episodes is a little short. This, along with simpsons season 3 are the ones I've been waiting for. All episodes from season 2 plus three from season 3 are rumored to be on this set. The complete list is as follows (19 episodes) Running Time: over 7 hours =)

1. I second that emotion
2. Brannigan begin again
3. A head in the polls
4. Xmas story
5. Why must I be a crustacean in love?
6. Put your head on my shoulder
7. Lesser of two evils
8. Raging bender
9. A bicyclops built for two
10.How Hermes requisitioned his groove back
11.A clone of my own
12.The deep south
13.Bender gets made (AKA Bendfellas)
14.The problem with popplers
15.Mother's day
16.Anthology of interest I
17.War is the h-word
18.The honking
19.The cryonic woman

Bottom Line:
Pure Genius

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Science Fiction Show Canceled Before Its Time, Aug 19 2003

This review is from: Futurama: Volume 2 (DVD)
Well, Futurama may be gone from the Fox Broadcast Network but it will certainly live on in DVD Collections around the world. This second volume is an excellent addition to any collection. By the second season the characters were reaching full development. On this DVD you will see episodes surrounding all the main characters like:
+ Dr. Zoidberg (Why Must I Be a Crustacean In Love?)
+ Hermes (How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back)
+ Amy & Fry (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)
+ Leela (A Bicyclops Built for Two)
+ Bender (Lesser of Two Evils, Raging Bender, Bender Gets Made)
+ Professor (A Clone of My Own)
+ Mom (Mother's Day)
+ Zap (Brannigan Begin Again)

It is a shame that this show was cut from Fox. Hopefully a better network will notice this gem and pick it up. Already the reruns can be seen on the Cartoon Network, TBS and MUN2 (Spanish). Can a revival be far behind?
