2.0 out of 5 stars What in the world..., April 29 2009

This review is from: G.I. Joe: The Best Of Larry Hama (Hardcover)
IDW has been making an honest effort to do right by fans of the classic Marvel Comics GI Joe series. Where Marvel themselves made a weak attempt at reprints several years ago, IDW seems to be shooting for a reprinting of the entire series (plus Yearbooks), in addition to special collections that focus on specific characters. Then there's GI JOE: THE BEST OF LARRY HAMA, which collects the best stories from the writer who is rightly considered the architect of the GI Joe universe (as far as the "Real American Hero" goes). When I saw the list of contents, I considered this book a likely purchase, but upon seeing it in the store, I left it on the shelf. I honestly don't see how IDW could make this collection any more unappealing.

THE BEST OF LARRY HAMA is indeed just that: a collection of ten of Hama's most highly-regarded issues from the Marvel series, including his lauded Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow saga, the Ace/Wild Weasel aerial ballet "Shakedown!", and an appearance by the original GI Joe. The book's oversized format was a bit of a surprise, since, aside from the few issues Hama illustrated himself, the series was not known for having stellar artwork. While some stories have apparently been recolored, the others appear to be lightly touched up or scanned, and the oversized format makes them look absolutely horrible. For a fifty dollar oversize edition, the art should be cleaned up and completely recolored... or better yet, just release it as an inexpensive trade to give curious newcomers a taste of Hama's work on the Marvel series. This book is a poor presentation of quality material and definitely not worth the hefty price.

I ordered this expecting something about the size of the other Best of books. Boy, was I surprised by the size of the package. The book itself is huge and of much higher quality than the other IDW books. The cover art is fantastic and the materials used to make the book (pages, binding, covers) are all of excellent quality and feel a step above most other TPBs.

The only quality gripe I have is that some issues look absolutely fantastic and others have a grainy quality that often occurs with low quality scans.

As far as the issues included go:

#21: Silent Interlude: This has been reprinted a few times, but is more or less the most famous issue of the comic.
#24: The Commander Escapes: The Joes take Cobra Commander prisoner only for Storm Shadow to help him escape (also available in the Best of Cobra Commander, Classic G.I. Joe Vol. 3, Duke and Cobra Commander figure 2 pack w/ comic)
#26: The Origin of Snake-Eyes Part 1: Another classic issue. It's also been reprinted a couple times, but is a must read for any Joe fans.
#34: Shakedown!: Wild Weasel and Ace have an amazing aerial dogfight with Baroness and Lady Jaye brought along for the ride. Another great issue and to the best of my knowledge hasn't been reprinted in TPB form outside of the Classic G.I. Joe volumes.
#63: "Going Under": While on vacation in Grenada the Joes encounter a blind man who may be more than meets the eye. (A great read and probably worth checking out if you're interested in the upcoming film).
#85: SFX: Another silent issue. Good but I liked Silent Interlude better
#86: ...Not Fade Away: The Joes encounter the first G.I. Joe. Good issue, and like with 63, worth checking out if you're interested in seeing where the characters in Retaliation came from.
#91: No Simple Solutions: Zartan faces the Blind Master. Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, and Storm Shadow face the Red Ninjas. The Dreadnoks try to brainwash Clutch. Excellent issue.
#104: Hero of the People!: While trying to rescue a government agent, Snake-Eyes becomes a hero to the people of Borovia.
Special Missions #17: All In a Night's Work: The Joe team tries to foil a late night hostage situation. I'm not sure why this one was included. It's okay at best.

So in summary, if you choose to get this, you'll be getting a beautiful book, with 9 great issues, one okay issue, some of them have been reprinted, but if the new and used prices remain as low as they are now, it's well worth the price.

while the actual contents are awesome since it's Hama, I cannot justify this since the issues are being reprinted omnibus style in the other collections...

seems kind of obsolete, doesn't it? I feel bad saying that because there is simply no fault here on the part of Hama....

if you can get past that... it's fantastic!
