2.0 out of 5 stars Stick with the OLD G3. Eric Johnson fits better!, April 10 2004
This review is from: G3 - Live In Denver 2003 (Satriani, Vai & Malmsteen) (DVD)
I have to say first off that I'm a huge fan of Satriani, and I love Vai's technical capabilities. As for Yngwie, well, he's FAST and he knows his scales, but he has no heart and just likes to make lots of noise.

That's basically what I felt like I was listening to during the entire DVD. Noise. First off, the sound quality is pure crappola. I don't know what Satch is doing with his 'new setup', but I guess he was using his pre-finalized JSX amp, and I wasn't impressed at all. The sound came off as brittle and wayyy too high in the treble range. As for his song choices, well, I like them, but he should have done something I haven't heard that often live before, such as BELLY DANCER or anything OTHER than SATCH BOOGIE and MYSTICAL POTATO HEAD. It doesn't help that I didn't like the mix.
Steve Vai did his thing, which was to make funny, arrogant poses while he shows off the cool noises he can make with his guitar, and proves that he can use a lot of gear competently. It's a virtuoso performance, but I wouldn't expect less from Vai. I liked the Live in Astoria DVD more, and I'm glad he played JUICE, but I get tired of his onstage show-offy gimmick quick. And his funny facial expressions. Get over it, dude! You're an awesome player, but your ego is even more awesome than your abilities!
Yngwie Malmsteen; I'm not a fan, and he really doesn't fit in that well with Satch and Vai. It's just his constant sweep picking and thrashing. Completely out of place and neo-classical to the point of absolute redundancy. Just get off the stage already, man!!
In the old G3 concert, Eric Johnson helped mellow the other two out, but when they are doing their G3 Finale on THIS show, it seemed as if Vai was trying to upstage Malmsteen with speed and plain annoying NOISE while Satch wanted to try and keep up with the frenzy; although Satch still sounded like Satch, it sounded to me like Satch trying to be more than what he is so he can 'fit in' with his duo. I like the Satch that finds a groove and goes with it, not the one that plays in high treble, high speed and low quality for those fast notes. Leave that to Malmsteen, duder!

I say stick with the old G3 concert. It had a lot more to offer than this racket. Plus, LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO and LIVE AT THE ASTORIA show Satch and Vai in their better modes, and in a more organized manner.

It was hardly worth the ten dollars for purchase. Eeek!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every damn penny!, Jun 26 2004

This review is from: G3 - Live In Denver 2003 (Satriani, Vai & Malmsteen) (DVD)
When I watched Vai play live in Athens a couple of years ago I was just shocked!!! I couldn't believe my eyes!
And with this DVD I was just as shocked!
Malmsteen is awesome too, although I have never been a big fun of his classical stuff and the endless "I-think-i-have-heard-this-solo-before" shredding. However when he goes pentatonic he is blowing you away! I wish he would do that more often. Satch kicks butt as well.
The performance in the jam was simply out of this world... Little Wing was superb, and Yngwie singing on Voodoo child simply left me begging for more!
Definitely gonna get it on audio as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Show, Nov 26 2005
This review is from: G3 - Live In Denver 2003 (Satriani, Vai & Malmsteen) (DVD)
Three different players, three great segs, and the final jam make this DVD a no brainer- Seeing this show made me really appreciate all three of them even more.
