A straight arrow in your quiver if you're aiming to shoot straight on the GRE! Feb. 22 2012

Format: Paperback Vine Customer Review of Free Product
This is an excellent addition to the arsenal of any student preparing for the GRE! I recommend this book, but I would encourage the readers to consider the other resources available, including the ETS Official Study Guide (available through Amazon). I had both of these books side-by-side for this review and my best recommendation is to use BOTH to prepare. The software with this GRE for Dummies book contains a whopping 5 practice exams, compared to the ETS Official Guide's measly two exams. Why not go with both and have 7 practice exams on which to cut your teeth and hone your skills? The key is to remember that no one book or practice exam will prepare you for this exam. Use the recommendations in this and other books, study the exam and the scoring, and practice, practice, practice in as realistic an environment as you can create. This book will help if you really USE IT!

The GRE for Dummies book is broken into 6 parts:
- Mastering the Test Taking Experience (note: basic test skills and tips - sleep, eat, practice, relax, etc...)
- Tacking the Verbal Section One Word at a Time
- High School Math and Beyond: Math You Thought You'd Never Need Again
- Penning Powerful Analytical Essays
- Taking Full-Length Practice GREs: It's All You (note: this is a good section on how to drill yourself in practice - some real nuggets here)
- The Part of Tens (ten key facts about the GRE, ten mistakes you won't make, and ten ways to warm up and relax during the GRE).

Also, the CD-ROM which accompanies the book is excellent. I found the flashcards for vocabulary and the practice questions especially nice and easy to use.

Here's the rest of the skinny on the CD:
412 vocabulary flashcards which can be viewed onscreen (click a button to view definition), in order 1-412, or in random order to test your skills.
5 practice exams which can be used in either a timed or untimed format.
CON: There is no on-screen calculator like the actual exam.

Here are the system requirements for the CD-ROM to see if your system will run the software according to the publishers:
-A PC with a Pentium or faster processor or a Mac OS computer with a 68040 or faster processor
-Microsoft Windows 98 or later; or Mac OS system software 7.6.1 or later (Note: I used Windows 7 without any problems)
-At least 32MB of total RAM installed on your computer
-A CD-ROM drive
-A sound card for PCs; Mac OS computers have built-in sound support
-A monitor capable of displaying at least 256 colors or grayscale
-A modem with a speed of at least 14,400 bps

Best of the three GRE study guides I've purchased May 10 2012
By Jewelry Lover - Published on

Most GRE study guides are very structured and dry. The formatting of this book is what makes it exceptional. You'll not go to sleep or get bored to death with it. I've purchased the Kaplan book, the 'Official Guide" and also a Barron's guide at my school bookstore. All were more expensive. In my opinion, the Kaplan book comes second to this, because it is so comprehensive (perhaps exceeds this book) but it is like chewing through cardboard to complete the entire book.

Look for sample tests in ANY effective study guide and this book has just that. In addition, the test is timed, which is what you'll be facing when you go to take the test. Practicing in this environment is the best way to get ready for the real test. Other written tests and cd rom online tests do not have this timed feature. If you have test anxiety like I do, I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to complete timed practice tests before you get to the testing location. After failing the first test (didn't meet the math scores I needed) I had to back up and study more then re-take it. This book helped put me at ease for the test the second time.

The strategies offered in taking the GREs are just as valuable as the study material.

Bottom line: Buy this book! .....or give it to your favorite college junior headed for grad school!

If you only buy one to study, buy this one! April 9 2012
By Charla Wilson - Published on
Format: Paperback
In my quest to study for the GRE, I probably bought 5 different study guides. But, it was this one book that I believe made the difference in my score. I agree with another reviewer that you should go to the ETS website and use the study questions they offer in addition to the Dummies book. The Dummies book is straight forward and written in an easy to understand and easy to use format. Truly, out of all the books I bought,I used this one almost exclusively. I should have just saved my money and bought this one book, because it is the only one that clicked for me. The GRE is an endurance test, first and foremost, and I believe this book helped me build up my stamina. I wish you Good Luck with yours!

GRE for Dummies Jan. 30 2013

This book does a good job of breaking the concepts down into manageable sections of information. I took the GRE 10 years ago so I'm petrified by the math. This book does a great job reintroducing you to the basic concepts. It's not an intimidating book like some other GRE study guides and it's very well organized. My only complaint is that some of the example problems in the front of the book are too easy and when I got to the practice exams I realized that some concepts and problems could have been explained in more depth. I'll have to supplement my math studying with another book, but this books is also clear about the fact that it alone may be be all that you need to prepare for this exam.

BEST GRE prep book I used April 25 2012
By James P. Robson Jr. - Published on

I used 4 sources in preparation for the GRE. I recommend this one over all of the others. The author does an excellent job preparing the reader for the exam. I am certain that this book is the reason that I did so well on my GRE this afternoon. Definitely know all of the words in the vocabulary section of this book!!! The only thing that I found to be missing are the different essay (issue/argument) that ETS has listed on their website. It would have been helpful had I known about these. All in all, 5 stars.
