3.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for BSG TOS fans, Oct 18 2007

This review is from: Galactica 1980: The Complete Series (DVD)
Galactica 1980 is a must-have for the BSG TOS fan. Most of us couldn't understand why they didn't include these 10 episodes in the original box set in the first place. They could have considered it a bonus disc if they were embarrassed. In any case, it is a delight to finally see the entire original series be complete with this release.

BSG 1980 was indeed a disappointment for me when it first aired, but I remained a fan and tried to overlook some of the silliness of things like the BSG baseball team. Adama's change from leader of the fleet to a mere servant of the all-knowing Dr. Zee bothered me also. But there is some good SF here: eps. Galactica Discovers Earth (3 eps.), The Night the Cylons Landed (2 eps.), and The Return of Starbuck are highlights of the show for me.

Everyone seems to be in agreement that The Return of Starbuck episode was great -- a leftover piece from the previous year. An audio commentary from Dirk Benedict on that one would have been amazing.

Addendum. At time of writing, the Amazon.ca listing is quite sparse. I am pasting an amalgam of information below from Amazon.com and other sites to help out others interested in Galactica 1980.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, a year after the original which is stereo, this is MONO!, Jan 22 2011

Ouch, I just got this, "Galactica 1980" (DVD). Yes, I'm a die hard fan of the original series of "Battlestar Galactia", I watched, and taped it when it was on television back in the late 1970's.

I gave this 5 stars because I know what went into this series, I was there watching each episode, and waiting for the many "To Be Continued" episodes. The first three episodes are a must see as; they explain that after so many years in space hunting for that 13th colony called Earth, which the Galactica finally finds, only to realize that they have also lead the Cylons to Earth as well, and finds out that Earth is not as advance as Galactica thought they would be.

I was surprised to find that this 2 disc set was only in MONO, not stereo as the original series is. However, that shouldn't stop anyone from getting this series. I enjoyed and remember it just the way it was, what is sad; is that I know that stereo television was there for this series, so, where is the stereo sound that should be with this one as well.

The fun you get from watching what went into making of this series, the "Special Effects" and "Graphics" that they used to make it would be plain by today's standard of CGI, not to mention the cost of today's television shows.

I did see the original movie of "Battlestar Galactica" in the theatre when it came out (I do have the DVD of this movie), and to think at that time, the movies where just going into the next generation of sound and picture quality, but nothing like what blows us out of the water with today's theatre (2010); movies like "AVATAR" and others like this shouldn't stop us from remembering the past of old television series.

Please enjoy this just as you would going down memory lane of this series, and just think that the next generation of "Battlestar Galactica" could someday be in real-D 3-D at a theatre near you; all I could add to that would be, "WOW".
