5.0 out of 5 stars Great product from the top down Jan. 15 2014
By Michael TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Having tried and failed to read the books. I'm dumbstruck at how much I love this show. The first season introduced a daunting multitude of characters & storylines. I almost gave up, but found the last 3 episodes took all the groundwork and paid off the viewer handsomely.

As 1 reviewer already stated, the 2nd season lagged a bit, but enough happened that I still found myself pining for the next episode.

Now with season 3, we see many of the finely woven plot threads paying off even MORE handsomely. Everything from the writing, to the production values, to the music and especially the staggeringly good acting (EVERYONE is good) is all top notch. I absolutely love that you never know what's going to happen, no matter how much you THINK you might.

This season raises the quality bar even higher, not bad for a show where the bar is already pretty high. This show is one that amazingly just seems to get better and better.

I would usually balk at paying so much for just 10 episodes, but this is no normal show and well worth my investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Season 3 trims the fat, but runs light at times July 10 2013
By Derek Draven TOP 100 REVIEWER
Game Of Thrones has been a major IP for HBO for the last few years, and it's easy to see why. First, it's based on the best-selling books by George R.R. Martin, which is the show's greatest strength. Martin's ability to put characters under a microscope and dissect their personalities and agendas is a strength that few writers possess to such a degree. Second, it makes clever use of traditional fantasy archetypes and tools by changing the way in which they're implemented, from mythical beasts to magic. Dramatic grandiosity is toned down in favor of getting in close to the relationships, backstabbing and double-dealings that permeate the severely flawed characters inhabiting the different lands. Season 1 came out of nowhere and shattered expectations, introducing the major characters before offing a few, to set up the ambitious Season 2, which was far more complex (sometimes a bit too much). Season 3 arrives after the audience has had time to get to know the slew of new characters that came before, and feels much more streamlined and back to task.

Season 3 focuses on five major plot arcs: Robb Stark's continued vendetta against House Lannister, Jon Snow's perilous mission behind the northern wall, Bran Stark's mysteriously symbolic dreams of a three-eyed crow, Daenerys Targaryen's ambitious military buildup, and the scheming and feuding between Lannister family members, most notably Tyrion Lannister. There are also smaller plot arcs taking place underneath of the main events, which are just as fascinating. We are introduced to the "Brotherhood without Banners," a group of mercenaries who manage to change the preconceptions viewers may have towards how magic is used in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly good March 15 2014

Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
I've read the books, and seen all these episodes on TV when they were rolled out. And yet, when I watched all the episodes back-to-back on this DVD, I felt like I was seeing parts for the first time. Even better, before I watched season three, I went back and revisited the previous two seasons in two marathon sessions, then dove in to these discs expecting to watch only one or two episodes a night. Two days later, and a few bleary eyed mornings later, I'd been through them all again and was thrilled.

The Blu-Ray disks are superbly mastered, with nary a thing wrong. From the menus to the additional content, I loved each disk. The sound is amazing, the pictures are crystal clear; this really is why we buy Blu-Ray disks!

As for the plot, well, not spoilers here except to say the acting is top notch, the visuals are amazing (the CGI blended so seamlessly), and the plot movement is kept at a decent pace with no boring moments at all. There's the violence and nudity, of course, which is not gratuitous but actually an integral part of the show. And there's the grittiness and political intrigue that mirrors real life, not just a fantasy world. In many ways, season three outperforms the first two in its scope and plot derivation, even detouring from the books a few times (for those who actually read the books!). There's more plot and character development in this series than the other two, as well, and some may see this as impeding the action somewhat, but in many ways it makes us more involved in the plot. A few loose threads from the two earlier seasons start to roll together, quite nicely, too!

If you haven't seen the first two seasons, get them along with this set and have a marathon viewing session. You'll be hooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than the first & second! Jan. 29 2014
By Cody A. TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Season 3 was much better than the first and second seasons and without spoiling anything I'd highly recommend watching all of it in order and not skipping any seasons, this season has hooked me on Game of Thrones and TV in general more than any other television show in recent years. I cannot wait to see what Season 4 brings us and below I have included the review I wrote for Season 1.

I had never heard of Game of Thrones until shortly after Season 2 had aired and was told I needed to watch it by several friends, I was skeptical at first because I'm not always a fan of medieval content but boy was I impressed after watching the first episode of Season 1. After my initial reactions I sat down and watched all of Season 1 and Season 2 in a few days and was extremely impressed by the writing and quality of the production which has increasingly improved with every episode that has been released. I've convinced so many of my friends to watch the TV Show and read the books and am extremely excited for what Season 4 will bring to TV audiences.

This is definitely one of my favorite TV Shows of all time, do yourself a favor and watch this if you like Fantasy, Medieval Era or top notch stories as this will appeal to anyone who likes any of those 3 things, let's hope HBO keeps creating content like this because it's one of the only things worth watching on television nowadays.
