5.0 out of 5 stars Flying Turtle Soup! Jun 20 2003
Format:DVD
Gammera's been rudely awakened from his nap (buried under an arctic glacier) by an atomic explosion; and man, is he ever pi$$ed! He immediately begins his world-threatening rampage, causing the UN to argue incessantly (in the dull, tedious parts of the movie). Thankfully, there are lots of explosions and tons of building smashing action! Enough to get me rooting for our beloved reptile, while praying for the poor shmuck in the rubber suit! There's also a turtle-obsessed kid who befriends Gammera. He's annoying like a mosquito buzzing in your ear! Listen for the nifty theme song! Pure cheese! Check it out...

1.0 out of 5 stars Gammera never really took off... Feb 3 2004
Format:DVD
Well I saw all the Gammera movies that were made, and they really were cheesy. It was a rather sad attempt by a different Japan film company to cash in on the popularity of the monster genre pictures, made famous by Godzilla. But where as Godzilla has attantied something of a success in popular culture with many movies under his belt, Gammera comes off as a plae rip-off, if these two monsters ever met in one movie, I think Godzilla would turn the turtle into soup.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Word of Warning... July 21 2010
Format:DVD
Gamera The Giant Monster was the first kaiju film I ever owned a subtitled copy of (Neptune Media's long OOP VHS release) and I am pleased to say Shout! Factory was preserved it well for its North American DVD debut. The picture and sound are both gorgeous and August Ragone supplies a nice commentary which spearheads some other fun extras.

A word of warning though... I've purchased/ exchanged 3 different copies of this film from different retailers in Canada and all of them freeze up in the same 2 spots: immediately following the "Freez Bomb" sequence and again after Gamera's Tokyo rampage. I don't know how widespread this problem is but it would seem to be a manufacturing error. Their release of Gamera vs Barugon thankfully does not follow suit.

Excellent product otherwise!
