Montreal's Dears have received much adoration in recent years from the UK press, and they do sound far more British than Canadian (frontman Murray Lightburn's voice and style frequently echo Paul Weller). But despite this high praise from the other side of the pond, the group eschews self-indulgence on their third full-length studio CD, Gang of Losers. Lead single "Ticket to Immortality" chastises those who fall for their own hype, and the entire album pulls back from the lush, orchestral instrumentation that previously brought the group praise. A full-on electric guitar charge dominates until track five, the pared-down "There Goes My Outfit." The equally endearing "Ballad of Humankindness," a passionate hymn, finds Lightburn repeatedly vowing "I'm gonna change." Near the disc's end comes "I Fell Deep," an emotional merge of gospel optimism and bluesy sadness that captures the heart of the Dears' appeal. Fans of the band's previous work should be sure to stick around for the orchestral hidden track. --Denise Sheppard

Album Description

2006 release from this loose collective of Montreal-area musicians led by the charismatic Murray Lightburn, who combine cabaret-style vocals with moody, intense orchestral Pop/Rock. 12 tracks including the first single 'Ticket To Immortality'. V2.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous, sincere album, Jan 19 2007
This review is from: Gang of Losers (Audio CD)
I was compelled to buy this CD after hearing the title track, and I am glad I did. If you appreciate thoughtful compositions and unique lyrics, then this record would be a welcome addition.

There is a very human quality about each song, and Murry Lightburn's vocals deliver it beautifully. While the music itself isn't overly heavy-handed and depressing, if you pay attention to the lyrics you will discover deep and thought-provoking themes, despite their seeming simplicity. I think that Lightburn & co. succeed at tapping an emotional source that speaks to the times in which we live.

The songs are written somewhat like mini stream-of-consciousness narratives, and are woven through lovely melodies. My favourites are "Ticket to Immortality," "There Goes My Outfit," and "You and I Are a Gang of Losers." What is consistent about each track: Honesty and humanity; gravity, with a dash of hope.

The Dears strove for earnestness on this album, and I think that they wholly succeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Ten Albums of the Year, Oct 6 2006
By Cold Head "Radio Play" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Gang of Losers (Audio CD)
Since I heard The Dears were working on a new album I have been impatiently waiting to see how they could follow up 2004's masterwork No Cities Left. With the new and equally impressive Gang of Losers, this wonderful band from Canada do not recreate No Cities Left. Which is a great thing. The intro to Gang of Losers would lead us to believe we are in for a supersonic sounding album. How quickly things change with the first actual song, coincidentally the first single from this masterwork. I was surprised to discover a sound that is much rawer than The Dears previous efforts. Almost a grunge sound on a few songs. There are definitely echoes of The Smiths scattered about in little vignettes. When listening to this album pay special attention to the wonderful tracks Bandwagoneers, Ballad of Humankindness and You and I are a Gang of Losers. Murray Lightburn puts his emotially charged voice on display in his chant "Heaven knows that I'm a fake" on Bandwagoneers. Heaven may know Mr. Lightburn but those of us not to divinely gifted can't see anything fake going on here.
