Gangs of New York may achieve greatness with the passage of time. Mixed reviews were inevitable for a production this grand (and this troubled behind the scenes), but it's as distinguished as any of director Martin Scorsese's more celebrated New York stories. From its astonishing 1846 prologue to the city's infernal draft riots of 1863, the film aspires to erase the decorum of textbooks and chronicle 19th-century New York as a cauldron of street warfare. The hostility is embodied in a tale of primal vengeance between Irish American son Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his father's ruthless killer and "Nativist" gang leader Bill "the Butcher" Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis, brutally inspired), so named for his lethal talent with knives. Vallon's vengeance is only marginally compelling; DiCaprio is arguably miscast, and Cameron Diaz (as Vallon's pickpocket lover) is adrift in a film with little use for women. Despite these weaknesses, Scorsese's mastery blossoms in his expert melding of personal and political trajectories; this is American history written in blood, unflinching, authentic, and utterly spectacular. --Jeff Shannon

En acceptant de financer le projet, Miramax met fin à plus de vingt ans d'atermoiements de production et de tournages sans cesse repoussés. Raconter Gangs of New York relève de l'entreprise périlleuse, tant les pistes narratives se croisent et s'entrechoquent. Pègre, vengeance, rédemption et identité américaine sont autant de thèmes de prédilection pour le réalisateur de Taxi Driver et des Affranchis. Sans oublier bien entendu sa ville fétiche, dans sa version XIXe siècle, le New York des bas fonds du quartier des "five points", une ville-foire dépeinte à l'hémoglobine où l'on s'étripe sans retenue; Une ville-décor d'un réalisme somptueusement cru, mais surtout une ville en recherche de son métissage culturel, terre d'accueil, entre guillemets, d'un flot d'immigrants irlandais aussitôt précipités dans une guerre de sécession interminable. Au delà de New York, c'est bel et bien un bout d'histoire de l'Amérique que Martin Scorsese, en bateleur virtuose, nous conte : une histoire bâtie sur la violence, la peur de l'autre, la corruption, la xénophobie et la politique spectacle, un mythe tout entier incarné par l'ombrageux et folklorique Bill "The Butcher", sorte d'Attila déguisé en bouffon magnifique et interprété par un Daniel Day-Lewis au sommet de son art. --Arnaud Caire

Scorese fans will be satisfied, if not blown away.,

This film is bloated by at least a half an hour. Leonardo DiCaprio is woefully miscast. Cameron Diaz's character is not only extraneously adrift in this male-orientated film, but also jarringly contemporary. The film's ploting is eye-rollingly obvious; Henry Thomas' character's true motivations are laughably blatant from his introduction onwards, and the 'fever-pitch' resolution and its denoument are soporifically dissapointing, containing an alarmingly high 'Oh, get on with it!' quotient. The film does redeem itself somewhat by its sufficiently grandiose pretensions, although striped pants and bowler hats and a parade of silly period get-ups have never looked particularly menacing. The political allusions are murky as well, drawing rather tenuous parallels with contemporary New York. Proceed, but watch furtively.

this is a Martin Scorsese epic,and it certainly has that epic feel.i'm
not sure how accurate it is historically,or if things really looked the way they do in the movie.i still liked the look of it.to me,it seems a lot of work went into the whole production and it shows.Daniel Day Lewis is astonishing(nothing new for him).Leonardo DiCaprio was also good.Cameron Diaz was not bad,but she didn't really impress me all that much.her character wasn't as substantial as it could have been.like in many movie,there's a good supporting cast.the movie is brutally violent,which is probably an accurate depiction of that time.it is over two and a half hours long,but it doesn't feel like it.i found myself becoming very quickly and easily involved in the story,a sign of a good movie.i wouldn't call it a masterpiece,but it is a very good movie.for me,Gangs of New York is a 4/5

Only those with Irish blood will really appreciate this movie. Not bad for and Italian director. The music is as good as the movie. You might as well buy them both because this one is a treasure. Make sure you read about the history in wikipedia after you watch the movie.
