An Enchanting & Moving Film, Mar 8 2012
This review is from: Garbo Talks (VHS Tape)
Pity it was never re-released on DVD (Edit: it is on Amazon.com). Bancroft and Silver, and indeed all the cast, deliver sterling performances which flit from laughter-provoking to tear-inducing and back again.
The Garbo character lends almost a fairytale air to the latter part as one never really sees her full-face, always in the shadows, or behind something, such as those hats that were so Garbo-esque or, as in the Central Park scene, behind the cherry blossom.
Without a mention in the credits we all believed for a moment that Garbo, who was still well and truly alive at the time, had actually come out of hiding and done the cameo role, but it was that wonderful trouper, the late Betty Comden playing the part.
This was also the last appearance on the silver screen of the late, great Hermione Gingold who I have always adored especially since seeing her years earlier on the Broadway stage in 'A Little Night Music' and who immortalized British Tourism TV commercials with her bus-conductor character's line "I'll let you go all they way for fourpence" - many years ago of course.
Well worth watching, again and again and, as another reviewer has said, would make a marvellous stage play.

Makes you laugh, makes you cry, Nov 21 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Garbo Talks (VHS Tape)
Tender and outrageous story of family love in midtown Manhattan, of solid vs. Gucci values; Bancroft and Silver together, is this not happiness? Hefty support performances from Hermione Gingold, Carrie Fisher, and Steven Hill (Law & Order's DA). If you're an outright Garbo fan this is your story.

When Garbo Talks..., Sep 24 2001

People listened.
I'm not sure how I first saw this movie; except that I ended up with the lobby poster hanging on hallway wall. The cast is impeccable! The performances are understated and every neurosis is there for the world to see... There is a kind of "Seinfeld" absurdity to the film.
Watch the scene in which Garbo meets Anne Bancroft... It is one camera move!! I want someone to adapt this into a play... It feels that small, that intimate.
