Product Description

Color Name:Black/Silver

Sharpen your cycling performance with Edge 500, a lightweight GPS-based cycling computer for performance-driven cyclists. Loaded with data, Edge 500 tracks your distance, speed, location and elevation with high sensitivity GPS. Add an ANT+™ compatible heart rate monitor, speed/cadence sensor or compatible power meter for a finely-tuned analysis of your ride.

Jumpstart Your Training

The Edge 500 attaches easily to the stem or handlebars of your bike with its low-profile bike mount. The Edge attaches easily to the mount with a simple quarter-turn. When you're ready to ride, just power on your Edge, acquire GPS satellites and go. Edge 500 features a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with HotFix® satellite prediction to calculate your position faster.

Get the Data You Need

During your ride, Edge 500 measures your speed, distance, time, calories burned, altitude, climb and descent, and records this data for your review. For extra-precise climb and descent data, Edge 500 also incorporates a barometric altimeter to pinpoint changes in elevation.

All Edge 500 versions work with third-party ANT+-enabled power meters to display your power output in watts as you ride. This valuable data shows you how hard you're working, regardless of conditions affecting your ride, so you can train smarter. Some versions also ship with a digital heart rate monitor and speed/cadence sensor.

Other helpful training features include a Courses feature, which helps you compare successive rides over the same route, as well as Auto Pause, Auto Lap and temperature readings. Edge also alerts you if

you’re moving, but the timer is not running.

Track Your Heart Rate

When paired with a Garmin heart rate monitor, Edge 500 tracks heart

beats per minute and uses your heart rate for advanced calorie computation, so you know how many calories you're burning. Train in a

certain heart-rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performance over the same ride.

Analyze Your Ride

Once your ride’s done, connect Edge 500 to your computer with the included USB cable to analyze your performance. With a simple click, you can join a worldwide network of cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts through Garmin Connect™, a one-stop site for data analysis and sharing.

This computer has all the basic function you need on a bike. If you don't need navigation, this is the one to get. You can still plan and follow routes on this one, but it's a "follow the dots" kind of navigation, if you get lost, this won't help you get back home.

"You get what you pay for", and this was about $150 cheaper than the newer and spiffier colour Edge 510. I didn't think the features warranted a higher price, and I'm very happy with the 500. It has all the data points that I need (and a bunch more I will probably never use, but more advanced cyclists -- particularly those with a power meter -- would probably get more out of the additional data). The unit is a nice size, too -- screen is visible (and you choose how many data fields you want, which impacts font size) and easy to read. The backlight is great, too -- you can set it to come on based on sunset/sunrise times, which is very handy (stays on when finishing a night ride).

I wanted GPS capability for routes (turn-by-turn and breadcrumb trail), and the Edge 500 generally delivers. The ability to upload routes from RideWithGPS and other sites is super easy. The directions are good, and easy to follow when it's working properly. The issues I have that for me make the 500 warrant only 4 stars instead of 5 are:

1) When following a route, the GPS frequently flashes "off course" and then finds the course again. More of an annoyance than anything.

2) The 'breadcrumb' route map (lines and arrow/position) is not scalable -- a smaller scale (less area on the screen) would be helpful when following the route map in dense urban areas with short street blocks. I've missed quite a few turns because I'm not great at estimating what "100m" is, and with the auto scale resolution, I'm sometimes past a turn.

3) When you're off course on a route, there is no arrow showing the way back.

The GPS is working fine, thé battery life is good, I charge the device each time I sync it with my computer and I never ran out of battery. The only issue with it is the GPS position detection when powering on the device, it takes way too long, about 3 minutes or it takes forever if I'm moving during satellite detection process.

I've always enjoyed Garmin products. It arrived on time and in perfect condition. Paired perfectly with my garmin vector s and heartrate strap. Gives me all the data I need during and post-workout through garmin connect too.
