3.0 out of 5 stars Canadian Topographical Maps Required April 22 2012

Garmin Oregon 450t Waterproof Hiking GPS
Excellent hiking GPS but would be better if Canadian topographical maps were provided or some such description making customers aware that the maps are not provided, other than not mentioning Canadian topographical maps. This would better reflect the true cost of making it operational for Canadians.
It is incomplete and not usable without the maps.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good buy, a few disapponting bits Sep 8 2012

I'd been considering buying a GPS for my outdoor adventures for some time - hiking, cycling, x-country skiing, kayaking, ... But I found it very difficult to pick out the right device. Garmin has a bunch of products, and it's probably a straightforward choice if you do one specific activity; but if you're a multi sport enthusiast, it's hard to pick out the right one. And Garmin stinks at explaining the true differences in neophyte terms.

Turns out the Oregon 450t is an excellent choice for me. Except for the "t" part - it means I payed a considerable premium for a US topographic map which is useless for me in Canada - and since I bought this from amazon.CA I thought I might be getting a Canadian product. So I ended up having to buy the optional Canadian topographic map online (plus a micro SD card to host it). Amazon could have been a bit clearer about this as well.

Also the Garmin documentation for this device is extremely superficial. You have to learn everything by yourself by trial and error. Fortunately my son owns a Garmin Edge and let me benefit from his knowledge of that neat toy to get me started. And it's too bad because the Oregon is also a great little toy for outdoor enthusiasts. So far, I've been using it to track my bike rides (and a couple of long paddles in my kayak), and also for geocaching, a sport which I'm just now discovering. As a "for instance", I couldn't find any reference anywhere for Garmin's "connect" web site; this is a fantastic feature but not documented anywhere (that I could see) in my Oregon manual. BTW I tried the Basecamp application and didn't find it particularly useful to my needs.

So all in all, The Oregon 450 is a great little device, but Garmin need to hire competent writers to document and publicize their gear.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Canadian TOPO map Jun 14 2011
By dw
Amazon stated that this product had Canadian TOPO map and it does not. Amazon told me to order item and return if not correct. The return is taking a long time to process.
