For grim adventure, begin here,

This review is from: Gaunt's Ghosts: The Founding (Paperback)
This omnibus is a collection of the first three Gaunt's Ghosts novels: First and Only, Ghostmaker, and Necropolis. Dan Abnett writes science fiction combat better than any other writer I have encountered, and these three novels make for great reading. First and Only provides the origin of the Tanith regiment and Ibram Gaunt's accession to command; Ghostmaker is a series of short stories which provide character development for many of the supporting characters; and Necropolis is the account of the Ghosts' first truly epic battle, defending the hive city of Verghast.Anyone interested in the Gaunt's Ghosts series should begin here; this collection shows us the development of the Tanith First-and-Only from the stunned survivors of their planet to a finely honed fighting force. Fantastic escape reading for anyone who loves sci-fi warfare, and especially for anyone who is a fan of Warhammer 40k.

A solid, enjoyable read,

This review is from: Gaunt's Ghosts: The Founding (Paperback)
This first Gaunt's Ghosts omnibus contains Dan Abnett's very first novel. If you're already familiar with his later books, the writing is a little clunkier, just doesn't flow quite so well, and if you're really bothered by inconsistency in minor items (e.g. laser weapons sometimes cauterise wounds and sometimes cause massive bleeding) you will probably find this collection frustrating at times. However, it's still a very enjoyable read and gets consistently better throughout the volume. Sets the tone & background well for the later stories and introduces some of the most memorable characters in the Black Library.
