Review

I've seen many patients in my chiropractic practice lose weight and improve their health with various low carb programs. I'm impressed at how Dana has foregone the one-size-fits-all cookie cutter approach to dieting, instead giving the reader plenty of options, and a comprehensive understanding of the underlying principles needed for success. Readable, user-friendly, and easy to understand. Recommended. -- Gary Knutson, D.C.

Book Description

Subtitled "Everybody's Guide to Low Carbohydrate Dieting", How I Gave Up My Low Fat Diet and Lost Forty Pounds! is a breezy, chatty,non-technical, fun-to-read explanation of low carbohydrate dieting -- why it works, the surprising health benefits, and most importantly, how to "do" the diet. Or, rather, diets, since the book details three very different main approaches to controlling carbohydrates (including the Basic Low Carb Diet, similar to Atkins or Protein Power, and the Mini-Binge Diet, popularized as The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet), plus several variations, finally summing up the basic principles which tie them all together. The point is to give the reader the tools necessary to construct a new way of eating that will fit his or her body, psyche, and lifestyle, thus allowing them to stay slim, energetic, and healthy for life.

About the Author

After a childhood of obesity and severe sugar addiction, author Dana Carpender became fascinated with nutrition and alternative medicine at the age of 19. With nearly 20 years in these fields, she tried the popular low fat/high complex carbohydrate diet and found herself a borderline hypertensive at 190 pounds. Desperate, she read in a nutrition book from 1952 that obesity was a carbohydrate intolerance disease, and decided to drop starches and sugars from her diet -- what was there to lose?

Forty pounds and two years later, having read everything she could find on the subject of low carbohydrate diets, Dana gave a hour-long lecture at Bloomington Health and Fitness Center. The local cable access station asked if they could send a camera -- and the resultant show is the most popular in BCAT/CATS history. "I've had phone calls," Dana says, "from people who say things like, 'I saw you on TV six months ago, and I want you to know I lost 35 pounds.' Suddenly, I was getting recognized in public. I got questions -- so many questions! Finally, I decided to write it all down, just the way I've explained it to friends over lunch."

The result was How I Gave Up My Low Fat Diet and Lost Forty Pounds! Written in a friendly, non-technical style, it is "Everybody's Guide to Low Carbohydrate Dieting." Rather than giving a one-size-fits-all approach, the book details a wide variety of options, so the reader can customize a program for their body and their life. Dana also explains the biochemistry of a low carbohydrate diet, and its surprising health benefits, in language that is not only understandable, but entertaining.

When Dana isn't running Hold the Toast Press, she studies nutrition, and works on her second book -- containing low carb recipes, menu planning, grocery shopping tips, and more. With 15 years experience, she keeps her hand in as a massage therapist. She is also an email junkie, and an enthusiastic Toastmaster, winning the occasional trophy.
