Product Description

From Amazon.com

When John Travolta first opens his mouth during the opening credits of The General's Daughter and speaks in a terrible Southern cracker drawl, one briefly hopes that the movie will turn out to be just as hilariously bad. Unfortunately, the accent is soon revealed to be part of a disguise, and the movie is just as quickly unveiled as a clumsy, run-of-the-mill potboiler. A female officer is discovered strangled and tied to the ground; she's the title character, and because of the general's political ambitions, the mystery of who did it and why has to be wrapped up in 36 hours by Travolta and fellow CID officer Madeleine Stowe (Last of the Mohicans, 12 Monkeys). Sexual violence and lurid S&M have been thrown in to shore up the incomprehensible plot, but that only adds to the queasy atmosphere. The supporting actors--an impressive collection including James Woods (Salvador), Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People), and James Cromwell (Babe, L.A. Confidential)--don't embarrass themselves, but even they can't make sense of their blustering, macho dialogue. It's amazing that screenwriter William Goldman (who wrote such great and genuinely thrilling films as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Marathon Man, All the President's Men, and Misery) left his name attached to this script; there's no sign of his usual skill and intelligence. Madeleine Stowe, a graceful presence in any film, is equally wasted. Directed with a lot of empty flash by Simon West (Con Air). --Bret Fetzer

Additional Features

The Special Edition contains four deleted scenes along with commentary from director Simon West on why they were edited out. Most include character development between Travolta's and Stowe's characters (who knew each other in the past), and one is a different final scene.

4.0 out of 5 stars DeMille does it again, another real winner of a read., Sep 10 2011
This review is from: NEW General's Daughter (DVD) (DVD)
The movie was nearly as good as the book. I would have liked to have seen Bruce Willis as the main man.

5.0 out of 5 stars a powerful movie about murder, cover up and conspiracy with a military backdrop, Aug 18 2007

This review is from: Generals Daughter (DVD)
this is a movie of murder, mystery and intrigue set against the back
drop of a military base.i found this movie very riveting and
engaging, although very disturbing.it's quite graphic in it's depiction
of violence.i liked the fact that you never really know who the bad
guys are until the end.there are a lot of twists and turns, with clues
(and anti clues)along the way.naturally,having a military setting,there
is of course a cover up afoot by certain individuals who want the truth
to remain untold.the movie also has holds some surprising and explosive
revelations.John Travolta stars in this one, along with Madeline
Stowe,Timothy Hutton and James Cromwell.i'm not really a Travolta
fan,but he's OK in this movie as the lead investigator assigned to the
case.Stowe plays his partner of sorts, and handles her role
well.Cromwell is the top ranking General whose daughter is the focal
point of the mystery.Hutton plays a high ranking Colonel whose
allegiance hard to pin down.i really got into this movie and stayed
riveted to the end.The General's Daughter gets a 4.5/5 from me.
