Anita Loos's old story from the 1920s about a pair of single women in search of husbands gets a makeover in Howard Hawks's 1953 musical, starring Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe as friends who go to Paris looking for mates. The film is charged by Hawks's stylish snap, a famous set piece or two (Monroe descending that staircase while singing "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend"), Russell's wit, and songs by Leo Robin and Jule Styne. The film may largely be a fluff project best remembered as a showcase for its leading actresses, but then Monroe and Russell rarely got such extended opportunities to prove that they were more than cinematic icons. --Tom Keogh

This is one of Marilyn's greats. The blu-ray format makes it even more special. Thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this Marilyn classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars great musical, gorgeous on blu-ray Aug 15 2012

Format:Blu-ray
Fans of this great musical will be happy to know that it's even better on blu-ray. The quality is fabulous - and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes never looked so good. It is presented in it's original "square" format, with black bars on the sides of widescreen tv's (the film itself was produced prior to the widescreen formats). Sadly, the blu-ray extras are minimal, but include very brief archival footage of Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell foot-printing and signing in cement, plus "non-restored" trailers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb production. May 7 2004
Format:DVD
Even tough I'm a huge music and film lover. Marilyn Monroe never called my attention and the first time that I saw one of her movies was in 2002 when I saw "How to marry a millionaire" and found it very good and funny. So from that point I started to buy some of her movies. From all her movies my favorites are "How to marry a millionaire" and "Gentlemen prefer blondes".
This movie is fresh and funny. You may think that films from the 50's are boring and well sometimes they are but this movie has that classic effect that makes it remain "young".
The story is about two hot dancers (Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell) that are searching love and money and well Marilyn is desperated also for diamonds.
So on one trip to France by ship they get involved in some problems with men and a diamond tiara.
The movie contains several musical numbers including the classic song "Diamonds are a girl's best friend".
