Product Description

George H. Morris has ridden and trained international show jumpers, champion show hunters and equitation stars for more than half a century. Morris, now the U.S. show jumping team's chef d'equipe, was named one of the 50 Most Influential Horsemen of the 20th Century in 1999 by The Chronicle of the Horse, the magazine for which he's written a monthly "Between Rounds" column since 1989.

Now, John Strassburger, who recently retired as the Chronicle's editor after 20 years and who created the magazine's "Between Rounds" section, has selected Morris' 50 best columns to preserve the equestrian legend's words for horsemen and women who are committed to riding and training their horses correctly.

The book is divided into four sections to encompass Morris' major themes over the last 17 years: In the section called It's Not Like It Used To Be, Morris analyzes the evolution of the sport he loves over the last century and decries the declining standards of horsemanship he sees around him. In What Good Teachers Teach, he offers his own unique brand of classically based advise on how to train riders and their horses. In I've Always Been Devoted To The Forward Seat, Morris explains why the century-old technique he favors is the best way to jump horses. And in George On Tour, he describes a few of his travels to destinations from the former Soviet Union to the Athens Olympics.

This collection of Morris' columns is the first of the five-part Chronicle Comment Series. For the second book in the series, due in Spring 2007, Strassburger will collect his 75 best Commentaries, from 1982 to 2006. Then he'll collect the best columns by three more "Between Rounds" columnistsƒVictor Hugo-Vidal, Denny Emerson and Anne Gribbonsƒfor publication in late 2007 and in 2008.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great compilation - bad editing, April 11 2007
By Clairvaux LLC - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: George H. Morris: Because Every Round Counts (Paperback)
I think this concept is great. George Morris has said so many memorable things in the past, it's nice to have many of his writings in one place. However, my only disappointment was with the editing. I have come across many typos, including words missing so sentences don't make sense. It's a shame that such a great book could be marred by something that's so easily managed. Otherwise, good book and I recommend it to others.

3.0 out of 5 stars Because Every Rider Counts, Jan 13 2012
By Lani B Blackford - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: George H. Morris: Because Every Round Counts (Paperback)
I read this book cover to cover looking for the wisdom that George Morris is known for and found many things. Sadly, those things were deeply buried in article after article criticizing "today's riders". This is largely a book of nostalgia for the horses and riders of yesterday. I have been riding and showing for 25 years (just a short amount of time compared to the author, of course!) but was offended as he seems to dismiss the idea that there are any truly well-rounded riders being trained today. In part I would agree but have found that the best riders and horses may be found outside Mr. Morris's fairly limited realm of rated horse shows where, more and more, money is the deciding factor between winners and losers. In the rest of the country where we cannot afford to show more than $3,000/year and likewise have a limited budget for purchase, training, and care we have finely groomed our other skills. The poorer riders may be found to have keen riding skills as well as incredible ability to select, train, and provide expert home care for fine, sound jumping prospects from the racetrack, rescue organizations, and even slaughter sales. We are showing against and often beating our "A" and "B" circuit competitors when they stoop to the schooling/open shows. Meanwhile, since we are riding and training in the Midwest rather than on one of the coasts or Florida our prospects are being ignored when it comes time for horse shopping. So, please don't add insult to injury by suggesting that good riders and good prospects don't exist anymore; we really are trying hard to get noticed by you despite our limited budgets! While extremely wealthy riders are showing for weeks on end breaking their horses down we are trying to train and build our horses and our horsemanship up and even spend much of our down time reading books like this one searching for new and valuable information. Visit [...] to see some of the green hunter prospects I've rescued, rehabilitated, and retrained.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book with wonderful classic George Morris information, May 11 2009
By J. Pierret - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: George H. Morris: Because Every Round Counts (Paperback)
While some people criticize George Morris for his straight forward, "tell it like it is" point of view, I find it extremely refreshing and educational! This book is a collection of his articles from "The Chronicle of the Horse", and each is better than the next. I have been competitively show jumping for 22 years and have always admired this solid horseman's thoughts and ideas. He is an incredible trainer with insight and critique in this book that are useful for the beginner to the professional! George Morris is a classic, by the book trainer, so if you want to know how you are supposed to look, dress, act and RIDE then get this book and take notes! I loved reading it and highly recommend it for anyone looking to find out more about the building blocks of hunter/jumper/equitation training and competitions, as well as learning more about the roots of this great sport. Tip: Read a chapter or two before you go ride! It will keep you thinking and growing as a rider and horseperson!
