Review

Praise for George R. R. Martin and A Song of Ice and Fire

“The only fantasy series I’d put on a level with J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings . . . It’s a fantasy series for hip, smart people, even those who don’t read fantasy.”—Chicago Tribune

“Martin amply fulfills the first volume’s promise and continues what seems destined to be one of the best fantasy series ever written.”—The Denver Post, on A Clash of Kings

“Martin has produced—is producing, since the series isn’t over—the great fantasy epic of our era. It’s an epic for a more profane, more jaded, more ambivalent age than the one Tolkien lived in.”—Lev Grossman, Time

“Addictive . . . George R. R. Martin has created the unlikely genre of the realpolitik fantasy novel.”—Rolling Stone, on A Feast for Crows

“Epic fantasy as it should be written: passionate, compelling, convincingly detailed and thoroughly imagined.”—The Washington Post, on A Dance with Dragons

“I always expect the best from George R. R. Martin, and he always delivers.”—Robert Jordan

Quick Review (TL;DR)
These books are great. Expansive well described settings and extremely complex and detailed characters. You'll find yourself loving character you hated in a previous books and feeling compassion for psychopathic torturers.
Nothing happens the way you think it'll happen and no one you want to live lives. Everyone dies except for the ones you expect to.
I would highly recommend reading this series as long as you don't mind waiting 1-2 decades as the following books are released.

Fuller Review:

--If you want to support a story you enjoy and get the entire series at the same time you should buy this. --

All my life I've been waiting for something like this story. Every time I watched a movie where the good guy had some kind of distress or trouble and the bad guy seemed ahead, I still always knew who would win. As I am sure you all did. (granted this applies more to shows/movies than to books)

Every time a fairy tale ending occurred with the action hero walking into the sunset with his girl, I got tired. Every. Single. Time.

Good guy wins, bad guy loses/gets away and everyone is happily ever after. Sure there are some exceptions, but not really. Either everyone dies at the end or some other trope occurs. But the bad guy never wins over. Not at the end. Like some horribly boring, predictable formula.

This is the show I've been waiting for. Everything you think will happen doesn't happen. Or it does and then does a complete 180. No predictability at all. I absolutely love it.
You hate the character who paralyzes kids and then you grow to like them and empathize with their flaws as they grow into their character.

IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT AFTER READING WELL OVER 5000 PAGES THAT I AM REALLY ANTICIPATING THE NEXT TWO BOOKS. THIS SERIES KEEPS YOU ON THE EDGE FROM THE VERY BEGINNING TO THE END OF THE FIRST FIVE BOOKS. TOO BAD THAT G.R.R.MARTIN IS ALWAYS BEHIND SCHEDULE PERFECTING THIS EPIC. I WILL HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER FEW YEARS TO CONTINUE. STRANGELY ENOUGH THE TV SERIES FOLLOWS THE FIRST TWO BOOKS QUITE CLOSELY. THIS MAN IS TRUELY AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME.

READ THE SERIES . IT SHOULD BE COMPULSORY

I have just ordered this box set, despite already owning the first book. Having watched the show, I have some spare time and want to catch up. This has been quite the read so far! If you are a fan of the show and considering reading, know that the books give a lot more explanation and clarify some of the more confusing parts. Also, I have to note that this price cannot be beaten. Despite owning the first book, buying this set of 5 is much cheaper than buying the other 4 books.

I Loved the book and would read it again when ever i have a chance.

These series are so well written that they make you wanna keep reading with attention. The writer is really talented, he makes you live inside the story and live with the characters. The only sad part is that the TV series is nothing to compare to the vivid details of the book, it is a pure underestimation of the reality of the book. What is also confusing is how the plot started to change in both TV and Book which is confusing for some people.

I recommend this book to people who want to live a story not read it "IMAX" Style :) enjoy the book and looking forward to the rest of the series.

This is the most awesome and detailed series I have ever seen.
I now own the first three Seasons and I can hardly wait for Season 4 to come
out on DVD.
Since there only have been 10 Episodes in each Season, hopefully Season 4 will be available later this year!!

I don't subscribe to HBO and I probably would not watch the weekly Episodes but wait anyway until I can purchase the whole Season. I have purchased the books, but I will wait reading them until the Series is completed. I did the same with "Pillars of the Earth" and "World Without End", also two great Mini-Series.

I have a Prime membership and it still came a day before the expected delivery date. None of the books or the cardboard case had any damage to them. It was packaged well with a lot of scrunched up paper stuffing. They are paperback books but I'm beginning to find the benefits of these books over hardcover. I can easily put it in my purse to read during my commute to school and it doesn't weigh a tonne. The price is great. I saw the same book set minus the 5th book at Walmart and it cost $15 more.
Loving reading the books so far and I can't wait to finish all of them.

This is the first book written by George RR Martin that I have read. In fact, any fantasy type book, period.
The outline of the book is very easy to follow and completely captured my attention. It is rich in intrigue, loyalty, fantasy
I am only just finished the first of the series but am engrossed. The characters are well written and developed, you sympathize with them easily, regardless which side you are on.
So glad to see now there is a sixth book out, looking forward to spending the whole summer in Westeros.
