Product Description

Review

Praise for George R. R. Martin and A Song of Ice and Fire

“The only fantasy series I’d put on a level with J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings . . . It’s a fantasy series for hip, smart people, even those who don’t read fantasy.”—Chicago Tribune

“Martin amply fulfills the first volume’s promise and continues what seems destined to be one of the best fantasy series ever written.”—The Denver Post, on A Clash of Kings

“Martin has produced—is producing, since the series isn’t over—the great fantasy epic of our era. It’s an epic for a more profane, more jaded, more ambivalent age than the one Tolkien lived in.”—Lev Grossman, Time

“Addictive . . . George R. R. Martin has created the unlikely genre of the realpolitik fantasy novel.”—Rolling Stone, on A Feast for Crows

“Epic fantasy as it should be written: passionate, compelling, convincingly detailed and thoroughly imagined.”—The Washington Post, on A Dance with Dragons

“I always expect the best from George R. R. Martin, and he always delivers.”—Robert Jordan

Quick Review (TL;DR)
These books are great. Expansive well described settings and extremely complex and detailed characters. You'll find yourself loving character you hated in a previous books and feeling compassion for psychopathic torturers.
Nothing happens the way you think it'll happen and no one you want to live lives. Everyone dies except for the ones you expect to.
I would highly recommend reading this series as long as you don't mind waiting 1-2 decades as the following books are released.

Fuller Review:

--If you want to support a story you enjoy and get the entire series at the same time you should buy this. --

All my life I've been waiting for something like this story. Every time I watched a movie where the good guy had some kind of distress or trouble and the bad guy seemed ahead, I still always knew who would win. As I am sure you all did. (granted this applies more to shows/movies than to books)

Every time a fairy tale ending occurred with the action hero walking into the sunset with his girl, I got tired. Every. Single. Time.

Good guy wins, bad guy loses/gets away and everyone is happily ever after. Sure there are some exceptions, but not really. Either everyone dies at the end or some other trope occurs. But the bad guy never wins over. Not at the end. Like some horribly boring, predictable formula.

This is the show I've been waiting for. Everything you think will happen doesn't happen. Or it does and then does a complete 180. No predictability at all. I absolutely love it.
You hate the character who paralyzes kids and then you grow to like them and empathize with their flaws as they grow into their character.

I bought these books in hard copy (from Chapters) and kobo as well (but not on Amazon) well before they became a tv series, and I have to state that they are one of the best series I've EVER read.. and I read a lot of books. There is a lot of detail, so you feel like you are really in their world, but it's not so much that you feel overwhelmed and want to skip pages. I found that I got super invested in the story, and had favourite characters (go Arya, or whatever name you're going by today), and would get really sad (or MAD) when characters were killed (like threw the book across the room once). I think that reading this series is way better than the show, and is something that young adults to middle adults can really enjoy. The story keeps you on the edge of your seat while jumping from one location to another (similar to a soap opera). You never have any idea what is coming, and there are so many twists to the story line - it's just fantastic.

This was NOT something I received free to review, just something I own and adore in my own library collection.

The books came in almost perfect condition but the box for the box set was banged up thus the graphics on the box damaged. Especially when intended as a gift looks are a big deal.

Very good for the price, but there are annoying glitches. The three big ones: (1) When the table of contents (toc) tab is selected, the reader is not directed to the toc for the book he is reading, but rather only to the toc of book 5. (2) Some of the general-level maps for book 4 are missing, so the reader has to seek out the maps in the other books. (3) Because the maps are so integral to following many of the geographical aspects of the books, at least one complete set of maps should have been included as a tab mark. It is a bit annoying to have to bookmark the maps oneself and then try to find the appropriate mark amongst all of the other bookmarks one stores over time.

The publisher really should have "test-driven" this product using actual first-time readers.

Otherwise, I can't complain about the actual content - what a wonderful set of stories!

Great read. I could not put the book down some nights! Complex and detailed characters, great descriptions of environments. You find yourself hating a character to actually start liking them half a book later. The story is full of action and there is some romance too. Each chapter is focusing on a different character and ultimately all the stories eventually intertwine. Each chapter leaves you longing for knowing what's next for each of the characters.
The books are slightly different from the HBO series so don't be surprised if certain characters end up having a different fate from what you've seen. Won't say more as I don't want to spoil the fun for other readers ;)

I have just ordered this box set, despite already owning the first book. Having watched the show, I have some spare time and want to catch up. This has been quite the read so far! If you are a fan of the show and considering reading, know that the books give a lot more explanation and clarify some of the more confusing parts. Also, I have to note that this price cannot be beaten. Despite owning the first book, buying this set of 5 is much cheaper than buying the other 4 books.

A good read. I decided to read the series before watching it on HBO, and so far its been enjoyable and for the most part, a page turner where I need to see what happens next. Considering that each book is typically a thousand pages, it's an important element in fictional books I read...for the writer to grab my interests and feed me as much creativity as they can so I don't want to put the book down. George R.R. Martin has accomplished that with this series.
