Product Description

From Kirkus Reviews

First in the new ``Portraits of Women Artists for Children'' series, a brief survey of O'Keeffe's life and work. Turner writes intelligently about the evolution of O'Keeffe's distinctive style and subject matter, emphasizing the difficulties women faced in getting an education in art and in being taken seriously as artists at the turn of the century. Biographical details are more cursory but adequate. Illustrated with representative examples of paintings and well-chosen photos. An attractive introduction. Book Description

In this portrait of the great artist Georgia O'Keeffe "Turner offers the best selection of full-color reproductions and a text that, while brief, engaging, and accessible to all readers, gives insight into the woman as artist."--School Library Journal, starred review.

3.0 out of 5 stars O'keeffe for kids, Aug 1 2005

Turner, I believe did a good job at summarizing her art with her life. She showed the art with what O'Keefe looked at herserlf. She described what the work meant to O'keeffe and why art was important to her. This overall is a great book to use as a short summary of such a great woman.

4.0 out of 5 stars Many details -- this may not be right for your kids, Jan 25 2012

This review is from: Georgia O'Keeffe: Portraits Of Women Artists For Children (Paperback)
This book goes into rather more detail about O'Keeffe's and Steiglitz's relationship than I am comfortable giving to a grade schooler, but the book is a good biography and includes MANY color photographs of O'Keeffe's work.

I'm a bit troubled that the name of the series is "Portraits of Women Artists For Children" and a main theme of the book seems to be "Sleep with a famous male artist and you'll be successful." Maybe that's just me.

A better choice for children, although much easier, is "Georgia O'Keeffe" by Ray Spangenburg.
