I've carried a swiss army knife in my pocket for over 30 years. However, aside from the bottle opener and knife, I get very little use for the other tools. I often find myself wishing that I had pliers.

The Gerber Crucial tool is a great tool.

It is fairly compact --although a it more bulky that I expected.
The tools are well made are usefull.
I do find that knife is too easy to open but I haven't had an accidents.

My biggest beef with this multitool is the knife. It was never that sharp to begin with and after a few months of light use it can't even cut sailing rope effectively. Plus the location of the serration on the blade isn't very smart either - it shreds rope or cardboard, if you try to use it. Basically the cutting component is total garbage, particularly if you've ever had a Victorinox knife (I've had one for more than a decade without having to sharper it and it's still cuts coke cans like it's brand new. Albeit brand new Victorinox knifes are dangerously sharp).
The 'clip/beer opener component - it's fine.
Philips screwdriver bit - quite useless.
Flat screwdriver bit - works fine.
Pliers - don't provide enough grip, quite weak. The thinner end doesn't really hold on to anything - not enough ridges. But the thicker end isn't any better - just shreds nuts, really.
So the two main components of this multitool - the pliers and the knife - are absolute garbage. But hey, at least it LOOKS pretty sitting on the desk, collecting dust.
Gerber really tarnished their reputation in my eyes - I'm flocking to the warm embrace of either Leatherman or Victorinox for my next multitool.

Very well made product with hard steel and a nice finish however within the first couple of days the carabiner started to feel like it was grinding sand when opening it. It hadn't left my house and I don't keep sand inside so I'm not sure what the deal is.

I bought this tool for my husband, as he loves all of Gerber products and once again, he was absolutely thrilled with it!

Maybe I am spoiled by Leatherman July 15 2012
By William J. Culhane - Published on Amazon.com

I got this when my first Leatherman starting getting worn out (blade and pliers in poor repair). This is a little bit smaller and cheaper, so I thought I would try it. I wish I hadn't. The shape is not ergonomic for real work. The knife blade is not as sharp as I am used to, and it does not have a real tip. The other tools seem cheap and ineffective. The materials used are very light, and I don't feel comfortable subjecting them to too much punishment. For instance, the pliers flex too easily when subjected to any sideways force. The clip doesn't really add much, and it doesn't quite fold back in without some work. You can use it, but I don't. I bought another Leatherman.

Decent tool, if you get it on sale Jan. 6 2014
By Brian - Published on Amazon.com

The question is, what do you need?

This multitool provides very decent pliers (I for one prefer the anvil style cutters on the Gerber vs those found on my Leatherman Wave, especially for cutting a size 10 "E" guitar string, which the Wave can't cut). Even though the knife is partially serrated, which I am not a fan of, the non serrated portion is at the tip, which I prefer for slicing, and the blade feels like it is decent quality (even though it is no doubt 420 or comparible Gerber mystery steel).

What I don't like about the tool, and one of the reasons I don't carry it every day is that the flat driver is nearly useless at the plier end of the tool, and barely an inch long. The phillips is a 2D design, and doesn't get a good purchase in any application that requires significant force.

The carabineer is OK, but I would much prefer a more useful tool (especially since there is a pocket clip on the knife (which I think should be on EVERY multitool as an option). The black version of this tool, with the safety cutter is a better version, but that still leads me to the question, what do you need in a multi tool? This may cut it for some, I would say it is better to get a Leatherman Wingman at this price point, and for a few bucks more you can get a Juice S2, which adds scissors, and loses a few ounces in the process.

Seems cheaply made, arrived pretty beat up, OK for light use Sept. 4 2012
By Richard C. Drew - Published on Amazon.com

I have a Leatherman (a few different ones, actually) multi-tools, but wanted something with a clip so I could attach it to a belt or pack loop. Having these in a pocket, sheath or belt clip is not always the most convenient option. This will be decent for occasional or emergency use - that's why I purchased it. The frame is aluminum and plastic, the belt clip is decently heavy stainless, and the caribiner clip (also a bottle opener) is steel. Weight wist, it's light for the size.

The blade is 1/2 serrated, with a blunt-nose drop point tip - it's for cutting, obviously not for stabbing. It also has a thumb-catch extension for easy opening, and a spring closure to keep it in place.

It was obviously new and in the box when it arrived, but quality control is obviously lacking. It looks like it was shipped in a box of rocks and scrap iron. Scratched, chipped and dented. The two handle half don't align well when closed.

I picked it up on a daily deal for $22, so it was a good deal. For around $30 it's not really worth it.

Hasn't lasted a year. May 10 2013
By Kyle Dorwart - Published on Amazon.com

I purchased this after a coworker raved about it when I mentioned I was looking for a replacement after my gear was stolen. After looking at some similar options at the same price point, I went ahead and snagged one. I've had it for a year now and have been able to use it under varied circumstances as well as side by side with other multitools.

Pros:
* Compact enough to keep in your pocket, large enough in your hands during use.
* Blade is quick access and easy to open one handed.
* Pliers have a good grip and are nice needle nose style.
* Smooth action on all the parts even after a year of hard use
* Flathead screwdriver piece is a good size.
* The whole tool, when opened, feels really comfortable to use. The edges have a good slope and the curved handles are a plus.
* You can use every part easily with most types of work gloves worn.

Cons:
* The grey color I ordered showed up purplish, not my color of choice at all.
* The metal this thing is made of is pretty weak, it takes on scratches, dings, folds, and mars easily.
* The phillips head screwdriver is too large for most of the applications where I needed one.
* The bottle-opener/pack clip tool gate bent on a bottle when used as instructed (was easy to bend back, but it's another weak metal component).
* All of the screws holding the tool together wriggle loose every week just from carrying in my pocket.
* Pocket clip becomes loose and bends at the slightest bump.

To give some context for its use: I have employed it in around the house tasks and a few small/general repair tasks in similar "household" settings. I've not used it camping or in heavier repair work that required more specific tools. I currently own a Leatherman Wave, a Victorinox Rescue Tool, and a Swiss Army Knife in addition to this Gerber Crucial tool and have owned each for at least 3 years. This was the second tool I've purchased for use as a pocket every day carry tool, the first being the slightly too large-for-my-pocket Wave. I prefer the size and immediate utility of the Crucial, but the construction of it has left me wanting.

For 30 dollars (what I paid at the time of purchase), it's an ok tool. For light use this thing will probably last you a year or two. This is definitely not a "hand down through the generations" piece of equipment and that's ok too. If you want a solid multitool for emergencies/constant use/varied utility you might want to look elsewhere (my Wave has held up under some pretty harsh conditions at work).

A disappointment from Gerber Nov. 21 2010
By joeb - Published on Amazon.com

This product was a disappointment. The wire cutters did not cut wire, they just mashed it. The front of the knife blade wasn't very sharp altho the serrated portion was. The phillips screwdriver just worked its' way out of any screw that I tried it on. Overall, it's an overpriced piece of junk.
Gerber knows how to make great pocket multi-tools. I own two and I don't recall paying any more for quality USA made products than I did for this Far East import.
