3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointed July 10 2012

Having previously purchased the Gerber Bear Grylls Ulitmate Survial Knife and being very happy with it I didn't really hesitate to purchase this other product from that line. The packaging and assortment of products in the kit arrived in good shape. Having watched a couple of online reviews of this kit I figured I'd take mine apart and examine the contents. First thing I noticed was that the blade on the little "Clutch" multi-tool that's included was quite dull. Got much better after a quick sharpening though. Most irritating of all was that the little mini flashlight didn't work at all!! I considered returning the whole kit but see that Gerber is now offering a better quality emergency torch in the BG line for around $10. Also, after what I consider to be MANY attempts I was only somewhat successful in getting the fire starter to work. After roughly 15-20 strikes (and no spark!!) the ferrocerium rod actually came right out of the plastic handle! This kit has a decent combination of items to help you out in an emergency but I STRONGLY suggest going through your kit thoroughly and testing all of the items prior to packing it and depending on it!

After reading the 2 reviews already I decided to make one myself, after contemplating on buying the kit for a week it went on sale and i figured why not worst case I add my own stuff to it and make it better. Plus it gives me a good base to start. no premade kit is going to be as good as one you make yourself from scratch but I'm no survival expert so instead I decided to buy a premade one and add stuff as i go along and gain experience.

First off the nylon bag it comes with is great, although it would've been nice if the grey stripe was reflective, and the whistle on the end of the zipper string is pretty loud, and the plastic bag on the inside is pretty thick plastic, alas it is not waterproof as i squeezed it gently and heard air come out, but what can you expect from something made in china.

The kit itself comes packed with a lot of stuff however I find it very odd it didn't come with a few things; first being a button compass, even if it was a cheap one that cost pennies to make, people would probably complain about it being inaccurate but I suppose its better than complaining about not having one at all. There are no alcohol prep pads or bandages, so I added in some of those from my first aid kit at home. my ferro rod hasn't come apart on me yet and the gerber clutch tool is pretty nice and compact, although I find it odd that the kit does not come with the bear grylls branded one. the whistle inside the kit was a joke, i replaced it with my ultimate survival technology whistle which is way better.

i also added a wetfire tinder, some more safety pins a candle and a 0.5oz bottle of the 1 time use krazy glue and those really small packs of silica gel to the kit, it was nice that gerber left some room to add stuff. I don't suggest taking the kit apart unless you feel like spending a while putting everything back together, the way the bag is made it seems like everything is put together first then the bag is melted together around it. I tried out the flashlight, weird design to say the least where you have to push the blue part forward to get it to turn on. If your hands are slippery or wet you wont be able to do it easily, i had to use one hand to hold the keyring as I used my fingernails to get around the back part of the light to pull it forward otherwise it kept slipping. It is nice it has a replaceable battery.

in conclusion the kit on sale for $40 is alright, good base to add stuff to, the nylon bag, and the plastic bag are things that would probably a little hard to find for cheap, I can't find any place that sells small, thick plastic bags like that one, if anyone has found one please let me know. however for the regular price its not worth it in the least, it should for sure have a compass, and some alcohol prep pads and maybe a bandage for almost $70 regular price.
