Ricky Gervais's standup comedy is not for the squeamish. The man responsible for the cringe-inducing boss from the original British version of The Office takes fiendish glee in jokes about teenage cancer patients, grotesque obesity, ill-conceived AIDS literature, and accidental homosexual incest. But Gervais never seems nasty or crude, partly because he also delights in jokes about the political implications of nursery rhymes and comparing sharks with Nazis (sharks, with their ability to smell the tiniest amount of blood from a mile away, would have found Anne Frank in a heartbeat). But his greatest comic target is ego--and all the ways human beings inflate themselves to ridiculous effect. "I hate talking about all the charity work I do," Gervais declares. He compares the Falklands War to holding a midget at arms length and kicking him, and he imagines a conversation between a fawning Hitler and the philosopher Nietzsche, who's just a bit put out to learn how Hitler interpreted his work. What makes Gervais so brilliant is the slippery way he turns everything into its opposite: when he's self-deprecating, he reveals all-consuming vanity; when he presents a guise of intelligence, he rolls out the dumbest thoughts imaginable. The comic collisions in the viewer's brain are sublime and very, very funny. Also included on the DVD of Out of England: The Stand-up Special is an engaging interview with Gervais in which, among other things, he giggles about tackling taboo subjects and tries to figure out why one's friends are so much funnier than any comedian. Fans of Extras or Gervais's destined-to-be-a-cult-film The Invention of Lying should not miss this comedy special. --Bret Fetzer

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, April 13 2009

This review is from: Gervais;Ricky Out of England (DVD)
If you're a Ricky Gervais fan then you will appreciate this concert dvd. Though he performs some familiar bits, it's great to have them on disc for whenever a good laugh is needed. There is new material which couldn't be presented on regular tv (so there's the warning), but it's so funny, it's almost difficult to remember why. It's obvious the man has heart, and with an approach so laughable, he can't be as politically incorrect as he tries to be. (kinda like Don Rickles in that respect) My only complaint is that I wanted more. In a really brief 10 min. conversation with Ricky Gervais (the disc's only extra), he describes the performance as a 'greatest hits', and at 72 min. it could have gone on much longer. Still, I hurt myself laughing, and needed the rest...

5.0 out of 5 stars Haven't laughed this much in awhile, Jan 15 2009
By Walter Delmont "R. Hofer" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Gervais;Ricky Out of England (DVD)
I watched this special on HBO over Thanksgiving 2008, and it was one of the funniest acts I have seen in awhile. I would consider Ricky Gervais on the fast track to one of the best comedians ever. His humor while edgy at times, is extremely clever. I am a huge fan of George Carlin (R.I.P.), Larry Miller, and Bill Cosby, and Ricky Gervais can entertain using anyone of the styles used by these comedians. Some parts you don't watch this with your children or grandmother and others are perfectly fine for anyone. This is one is on my list of must haves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good.. But same as "Ricky Gervais Live 3 - Fame [2007]", Jan 3 2009

The show has some real highligths; "Best Leaflet" being one, and the production quality is great. It was recorded in New York in 2008 but quite a bit of the contentis the same as "Ricky Gervais Live 3 - Fame [2007]" (recorded in the UK).

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Funny 72 Minutes, April 25 2009
By Michael B. Druxman "A Good Story is a Terribl... - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Gervais;Ricky Out of England (DVD)
Ricky Gervais is a comedian who is not afraid to push the boundaries of good taste.

In this 72-minute special, filmed during his successful tour of the United States, the British funnyman not only pokes fun at charities that help the mentally and physically challenged, but also the Holocaust.

The amazing thing is that you find yourself laughing out loud, sometimes uncontrollably, at the humor Gervais finds in these ordinarily taboo subjects.

He also does extended hilarious routines on the male sexual organ and even Humpty Dumpty.

Gervais is, indeed, one of the funniest comedians of this generation.

Included on the DVD is a conversation with Gervais.
