Product Description

It has never been easy for new authors to find a publisher but in the last few years it has become significantly harder. In 2008, the average author earned less than £7000 per annum. According to The Times approximately 200,000 books were available for sale in the UK in 2007. Of that total, 190,000 titles sold fewer than 3,500 copies. The top 5% of titles by sales volume accounted for over 60% of total book sales. No wonder publishers are careful about signing new writers. But there is good news in amongst all the doom and gloom. Right now, it has never been easier to be published. Everyone who posts something on Facebook is in effect a published author. And some blogs are read by tens of thousands of people daily, many more than might pick up a physical book by the same author. Then there's self-publishing, vanity publishing, print on demand and so on. But how do you find your way round this minefield? Get published has been written by publishing insiders to help new authors understand the way publishers think and set about publishing if they can't get a commercial publisher interested.

3.0 out of 5 stars General info about publishing today March 9 2011

Firstly, I found this book based more on UK so you may enjoy it more if you're from there. Most of the information was pretty general; I can't say wow, this is something that will blow you away. It explains various publishing options and what may work for you. Some writing tips at the end of the book. I did pick up some info interspersed between everything. I got this as a freebie-probably would not buy it. But, I did read the whole book, so it's your call.

4.0 out of 5 stars For Those New to the Publishing Industry Nov. 4 2011

"...writing and publishing a bestseller is pretty much a matter of luck..."

Consider this: JK Rawling was turned down by 48,159 agents. Who knew there were than many agents to begin with! Who has the money for all that postage and who is in the mood for that much rejection? If you are new to publishing and are considering self-publishing or publishing more traditionally then this book is a good introduction to the process. The authors remind the reader that there has never been a better time when it was easier to be published. They also believe that self-publishing is a viable option. However they make sure to differentiate between vanity publishing and self-publishing. I thought the section on "do and don'ts" when dealing with a publisher who wants to see your manuscript, was invaluable. There are some tips for inspiring your writing which are a little crazy but probably strangely effective or the authors would not have mentioned them. The only problem I really see with this book is the glossary of terms. The terms are there but there is no definition. So the book ends at about 84%.

5.0 out of 5 stars A How-To Book for Book Lovers! June 21 2012
By John McLean - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Somewhere in the space between the exclusive, members-only club of old-school publishers and the free-wheeling Kindle mavericks of Amazon, you will find an alternative world that few knew existed.

This often cheeky and always very British book will teach you about this novel route for aspiring writers to travel. If you've ever dreamed of creating a book that exists in the real world and that can be purchased in real bookshops by (more or less!) real people, then "Get Published" is just the ticket for you!

As the author of a popular book on creativity and the writing/publishing process called GET PUBLISHED NOW! The Step-by-Step Guide to Writing & Publishing Your First Book on Amazon Kindle, I released the trade paperback edition through CreateSpace.

But this book wonderfully shows how to take an even more hands-on approach to the publishing process.

You'll learn how to prepare your manuscript for submission, how to work with an editor, proof your book and help in the selection of paper and font for its printing--in other words, all those fantastic Old World activities that many of us are forgetting how to do in today's lightning fast digital world.

The authors clearly love books and are seeking authors who also love them. If you've ever dreamed of holding a highly quality, well-bound version of your magnum opus in your hands, then you'll discover exactly how to do that in this book!
2.0 out of 5 stars nothing I would recommend April 18 2013

Very dated general information that didn't offer any useful suggestions. It barely touched on internet publishing except to say what it was in definition form. At least it was short enough to read in one sitting so there was no need to waste much time on it.
