Book Description

Aug. 1 2007

This is a mentoring book primarily for the 20-to-40-year-old with entrepreneurial aspirations. Many older folks will also derive considerable inspiration from the life and business lessons contained in Get Smarter.

In examining his own life Seymour Schulich, a Canadian billionaire and philanthropist, realized that at age 20 he-like others his age-knew very little and was aware of that fact. At 30, he writes, one thinks one has acquired a lot of wisdom.

Upon later reflection, however, he realized he knew very little at that age, too!

Get Smarter is Schulich`s brilliantly idiosyncratic and informative attempt to impart lessons learned in a lifetime to today?s youth by someone who has achieved success in both his personal and professional life. In short, stand-alone chapters he covers such universal issues as:

-How to make a decision
-Manage all types of relationships
-Choose a career
-Deal with adversity
-Key business issues
-Investing lessons

3.0 out of 5 stars Points for life, not a manual Jan. 15 2009
By J. Dyck
Format:Paperback
While some people complain the book merley scratched the surface of many interesting ideas it was exactly what it promised to be. Lessons on life and business explained clearly with no chance of confusion. The bredth of subject matter covered is in itself impressive. If you are looking for a book to tell you exactly what to do with all your life and money this isn't it. But, it will definatly help you 'Get Smarter'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Life and Times of a Sharp Operator March 19 2013
Format:Hardcover
Imagine that your rich uncle Seymour tells you that he will not leave you anything in his will but instead, he will pass on to you his life wisdom in the form of a book! Get Smarter is light reading but not fluff. The surprisingly modest Mr. Schulich has been both lucky and smart and he has a billion dollar net worth which proves the value of his opinions.

The best chapter summarizes how Schulich and Lassonde created and expanded Franco Nevada and Euro Nevada. I would recommend the book to any person interested in business.

I also agree with the author, Gladiator is the best movie ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great First Business Book Read Feb. 6 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book is great because it's such an easy read. It's not highly technical but is a great introduction to business. I've read close to 50 business books and this one is by far my favourite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and Effective Jan. 4 2008
Format:Hardcover
Schulich is a billionaire not by chance. This is a great book lacking the ponderous nature and pomposity of so many business books. The guidances are offered in short, quick to read chapters and many may seem simplistic. So simplistic that you don't do them. Give it a try, you'll see a difference.

1.0 out of 5 stars Get Smarter and save yourself money Oct. 15 2007
Format:Hardcover
This book is pure fluff: there is not one chapter that impressed. There was no advice of substance provided by the author, and in many ways I feel hoodwinked. Maybe therein lies the inside joke: Get Smarter and don't expect to Get Smarter by reading this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed! Oct. 13 2007
Format:Hardcover
Very simplistic and had very little concrete information that you could use to improve your overall wealth. I was disappointed.
