Get Up & Dance

Paula Abdul's fans will really have fun with this 45-minute, high-energy dance workout. Even the warm-up is energetic and jazzy. Abdul teaches two dance routines. She introduces a 16-count pattern slowed down, then speeds it up until you're up to tempo, adding on until you've got a routine. Don't expect teaching expertise from Abdul--she cues the moves, but never explains how to do what she's demonstrating. Just watch and follow. You may need to pause this video a lot at first to learn the moves--she doesn't repeat the slowed-down moves enough to catch them--but after you get them, it becomes pure fun. She is assisted by two of her tour dancers and a crowded class of what she calls "ordinary people," though they're mostly young, good-looking, and very fit. The production is colorful and flashy. The constantly changing camera angles are distracting and sometimes annoying, because they hinder you from watching the feet to learn the moves. You'll enjoy the playful cool-down to Village People's "YMCA," led by the males in the class. An abdominal segment and stretches finish the workout. Coordination and rhythm required. --Joan Price --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Three separate three-step dance routines that are combined at the end into a single 9-step routine, followed by a short outta-the-blue ordinary-chaps' dance performed by some YMCA guys; if you cannot follow paula, you can definitely follow these guys. Then you have a cool down section that also includes abwork.
Bottomline, if you are looking for a sweaty pop dance routine, get Abdul. If you want merely intense dancy aerobics, get Jane Fonda's Lean routine, but you gotta not mind her sparkly 80's fashion.
However, despite my first misgivings, I kept plugging away and it wasn't really all that long before I had the moves down and was exercising right along with them. Then it was suddenly nice that the tape was fast paced, because it means that its still interesting without a ton of really slow instruction. The tape is hard to pick up at first, but the dance steps are really fun. Its worth the initial confusion and disorder to get it all figured out.
I began doing this video twice a week. I ate the same, exercised the same, and did everything else the same. Within a few months I went from 154 lbs to 138 lbs and I have stayed there since (disregarding a few fluctuations around the holidays). Sure I am not Twiggy, but I look and feel great.
The video is broken down into three segments, each consisting of three dance moves. At the end you put the nine moves together for a great workout. The first segment (3 moves) is fairly easy, but they get progressively harder as the video plays on. In the first few weeks (if you are anything like me) you will never think you can get it down, but I encourage you to stick with it. Once you get the moves down, the video is a lot of fun! It is fast paced - this is bad at first when you learn the moves, but it is great after you know the moves as the video becomes fun!
If you truly have two left feet, it might be a little too difficult for you. If you're trying to learn to dance like Paula, that's not going to happen either (she's not teaching routines she uses or anything). But if you need to sweat, like to dance, and want to smile and laugh (Paula really is cute), then this is the workout for you!

HILARIOUS! My cousins and I used to dance to this in the basement when we were kids... so when I found it I had to buy it. Haven't really used it now but still a fun buy. Read morePublished 7 days ago by CC
This is an enjoyable routine. The steps are basic but the speed keeps it challenging.
Well suited to someone with a sense of rhythm... Read more

This would probably be a great workout for beginners and intermediates. If you are advanced like me though it's just too easy. Read morePublished on April 20 2004 by Moonmaid

Alright, I LOVE to dance especially street hip-hop, salsa, and merengue but I didn't feel the good vibe from this DVD. It felt kind of like military, and too technical. Read morePublished on March 4 2004 by J. Anthony

Paula might have recorded some questionable albums, but her workout routine totally made up for it. This girl knows what she's doing, and knows how to instruct you. Read morePublished on March 1 2004 by Autumn May
