Even though the idea of writing jokes about old Adolf--or addled rabbis, or Maatjes herring--isn't nearly as fresh as it used to be, Getting Even still delivers plenty of laughs. At his best, Woody can achieve a level of transcendent craziness that no other writer can match. If you're looking for a book to dip into at random, or a gift for someone who's seen Sleeper 13 times, Getting Even is a dead lock.

Hilarious,

Getting Even is a remarkable collection of Woody Allen's creative works of short sketches. The book is extremely humorous. It is a reminiscence of scenes from Allen's earlier films. Page to page I read, and page to page I laughed. That is how funny the book is.I liked "Mr. Big" the most. Woody Allen's humor from absurdity is a unique twist in writing. While reading this book, I laughed more in an hour and a half than I did all last month. Seriously, this was the funniest book I have ever read. Being new to Woody's writing, I was expecting actual essays, but what are contained here are actually short stories, and these are some of the best stories I have ever read. This may be insulting to some fans, but Woody can sort of be compared to Dave Barry, or vice versa. Barry's writing, of course, is incomparable, but you can find similarites. However, whereas Barry can sometimes sound immature and (ahem) dumb, Woody writes intelligently and hilariously. In one story that relates the history of organized crime, the author recounts how "Albert (The Logical Positivist) Corillo assassinated Kid Lipsky by locking him in a closet and sucking all the air out through a straw," initiating a bloodbath and the birth of the mob. In context, the humor is even better, and although two of the seventeen stories are somewhat lacking in Woody's trademark humor, the rest of the stories completely make up for them. I completely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the writings of Dave Barry or Douglas Adams: I guarantee that you will bust a gut or two laughing.
