A Faint Scent Of Bay Rum, Aug 13 2002
This review is from: Ghost And Katie Coyle (Paperback)
Katie Coyle takes a teaching position at East Bay and finds herself embroiled in the cutthroat politics of Academia. She meets Alistair Proser, a stormy academic of questionable repute, who is applying for the Sean Seamus Clancy Award, an award Katie also covets. Proser tries to court Katie until he discovers that she is writing a rival paper on the missing Earl of Kilmartin, who disappeared without a trace in 1799. Proser intends to annihilate his character by branding him a traitor who sold out his own brother during a rebellion in Ireland. What Proser doesn't know is that Derry O'Riordan, the Tenth Earl of Kilmartin, is a close personal friend of Katie's. He haunts the property Pond House sits on, having washed ashore after a shipwreck and perishing on the beach from exposure. Katie becomes determined to write a rival paper and defend her ghostly love's reputation. O'Riordan's ship was supposedly bound for the Australian Penal Colony but got blown off course in a storm. I have serious trouble with it wrecking in Massachusetts, since the sailors would be following established southern shipping routes that would hug the European and African coastlines. They'd be some mighty poor sailors to have blown across an entire ocean especially with England being Mistress of the Seas at the time. The author also mentioned a possibility of him being bound for a penal colony in Canada. The only North American British Penal Colony I've been able to uncover was Georgia. There was another minor technical detail that I found fault with. She mentioned the local library staying open later in the summer and closing earlier in the winter. I haven't been to a library yet that wasn't open later in the winter due to school being in session. Since Katie is a teacher, it only stands to reason that this detail should have been correct in the first place. If you can get past the questionable research, the novel is well written with an interesting paranormal twist at the end. The love between Katie and Derry is intense and the love scenes are hot!

Tremendous Chemistry!, Dec 4 1999

This review is from: Ghost And Katie Coyle (Paperback)
I loved this heroine, Katie Coyle, and was so glad that she found someone better than the stuffed-shirt boyfriend she starts with. When sexy Derry O'Riordan shows up, there's no contest. Her dreams become filled with a heat and energy Mr. Stuffed Shirt could never ignite. It's only a matter of time before dreams of Derry turn into realtime mating dances within the mysterious circle of Stones which stand in the woods behind Katie's charming new home. The irresistable visitor from Ireland always seems to be waiting for her when she walks through the forest... but a few things don't add up. Who is he, really? And why is he so curious about a 19th century nobleman from Ireland who disappeared mysteriously? Some local intrigue at the college where Katie teaches, along with transoceanic help from her twin sister in Ireland, move this plot along and makes for a fascinating story. Don't miss the hot connection between this cool ghost and Katie Coyle. It's a winner.

Great ghostly romance, Nov 5 1999

This review is from: Ghost And Katie Coyle (Paperback)
In 1799 off the coast of Massachusetts, Derry O'Riordan fails to break out of his chains as the ship he sails sinks. His younger brother risked everything for a free Ireland, but the revolt failed. The English convicted his brother and sent him to sail on this slave ship to spend time in an overseas prison community. Derry knew his sickly sibling could never survive. In addition, the lad has a family. The noble Derry replaced him on the sinking vessel. As he nears death, Kerry vows to find his beloved Annie even if it takes eternity to do so. In 1998, Katie Coyle arrives at Cape Cod's Pond House where she will live for the next two years while teaching at East Bay. Katie meets Mary Monahan who tells her about the ghost and the nearby energy stones. When Katie encounters Kerry the ghost inside the circle of stones, she believes he is an overseas friend visiting Mary. As Kerry and Katie fall in love, he realizes the futility of it all even as she begins to conclude he is not just from Ireland. THE GHOST AND KATIE COYLE is a spirited otherworldly romance that sub-genre fans will find very entertaining. The story line moves rather quickly with the subplot of college politics adding an earthly anchor. Though likable, the lead couple is the typical star-crossed lovers that populate these tales. The support cast provide a depth and a Cape Cod unique-feel to the plot. With this novel and the enjoyable A ONCE AND FUTURE LOVE, readers will feel that Ms. Kelleher is rapidly ascending to the pinnacle of the supernatural romance field. Harriet Klausner
