Product Description

This second motorcycle memoir (following 1996's The Masked Rider: Cycling in West Africa), from the author best known as drummer and lyricist of the legendary Canadian rock band Rush, chronicles a journey of healing. In the late-90s, Peart suffered a pair of life-changing tragedies: he lost his daughter and his wife of 20 years within a 10 month period. In the fall of 1998, in an effort to distract himself from grief and reevaluate his life, he embarked on a trip that took him across Canada and through the U.S. and Mexico. Through journal notes and letters written over the course of 55,000 miles, Peart chronicles his feelings of loss and envy, and the slow rebuilding of his life through the support of friends and family. Ghost Rider is also an alternative travel guide fuelled by the author's detailed descriptions of towns, roads, hotels, restaurants, and the people he encountered. "Moab proved to be the perfect small town, at least by the Ghost Rider's exacting criteria," he writes, "those being that a town should have a decent motel, a small museum of local history, a friendly post office, and a well-stocked liquor store." Thought-provoking and even humorous at times, Peart reveals in straight-ahead prose the emotional turmoil following such an epic loss--and we ride shotgun as he gradually acquires a renewed sense of purpose. --Eric Wilson

“Well-written, harrowing and filled with just-right touches of levity, [this book] is a necessary story about the human condition.” --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, Jun 29 2009
By D. Carson "Beemer Fan" (Toronto, ON, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book started well, whetting the reader's appetite for tales of an extended motorcycle roadtrip but once the stream of tedious letters started, I completely lost interest. One could be forgiven for believing this was a book about a man and his bike. Really, it isn't. It's about a man who, after suffering an admittedly terrible loss, can't seem to pull himself up, face the realities of life without searching for someone or something to blame, and get on with his life. Too much posturing, self-righteous reflection and, forgive me Neil, too much whining. Life can be tough. No one promised anything else. Get over it. Bottom line, if you're looking for a great motorcycling book, pass on this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Reads like a very long Rush song, Nov 14 2005
By A Customer
I could make my way through the first third of this book but could stand no more of it's self righteous, pointlessly thick preaching. I doggedly gave it three honest tries but each time could get no further. It has the same tiresomely all-knowing 'suburban teenage philosopher nerd' tone that Rush lyrics often employ.

It's interesting to note that most of the five star reviews on this list are from proud Rush devotees and self-righteous fans of Neil Peart's drumming. I've just never understood the attraction to his writing, I find his work to be hugely over-rated.

5.0 out of 5 stars I feel the soft ground under my feet; and I am moved., Jul 16 2004
"Living in a fisheye lens, caught in the camera eye,
I have no heart to lie,
I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend."
-- Limelight

And who can blame you? Who will judge you? Lost your life, your family, your love, your child, your spirit ! O cruel world ! You turned in your ambition for a cold dark hostile ride through infinite space and endless pavement. But you do have love. You do have light. You gave so much to the world in your youth. You were our only voice. You taught us all a philosophy that we knew before we became wealthy and learned in philosophy. You were our only philosopher; the greatest of all philosophers. Your gift was not only the gift of words of enlightenment, but was the gift of energy: adrenalin flowing. You gave the world truth: the rarest of all precious stones. Thank you. You are loved by millions. And many more will be born to discover your genius. Music is timeless. Perhaps we are all strangers to you, but you should know that we, your audience, all hold you close to our hearts. And in this that we all share, we are not strangers, but very close friends.

"Ghost Rider" takes us into the soul of Neil Peart, percussionist, composer, and lyricist and poet of the combined genius known as Rush. It is a mystery why he opened his soul in this text, but he did. It's true: we cannot know another unless we walk in their shoes. But we can share it all with each other. Neil pours it out. How you see it, how it affects you, is all up to you, the reader.

MR
