Although it took four years for Chantal Kreviazuk to record the follow-up to her successful disc What If It All Means Something, the Canadian singer/pianist was anything but idle in between. During that 'break' she gave birth to two children, wrote songs for Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson, and recorded her fourth disc Ghost Stories at home, with husband Raine Maida (the Our Lady Peace frontman) producing.

Ghost Stories proves to be a stylistic departure for Kreviazuk; rather than settle into warm, traditional ballads, these songs are frequently unpredictable. The classical music she studied as a child--combined with her love of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper (she references the album in the lyrics of opener "Ghosts of You")--has manifested into this evolutionary disc. Many songs come across as mini-operas, constantly morphing from one style and tempo to the next; as a result, Fiona Apple and Tori Amos comparisons will be made--especially in the frenetic "You Blame Yourself"--but the numbers remain stylistically her own. The anthemic "Asylum" is an impassioned highlight, inspired by a war refugee from the Congo, while "Mad About You" is another powerful moment, a love song whose chorus bursts wide open amidst Kreviazuk's fragile, raw vocals. Kreviazuk's unique "So Cold" veers abruptly from a straight-ahead soliloquy to an emotionally-exploding gospel-style chorus; while perhaps not destined to be a pop radio hit, it offers a glimpse of something brilliant, an evolving singer/songwriter who still has many colours yet to show. --Denise Sheppard

4.0 out of 5 stars A Change Of Style For My Beloved Chantal, Aug 31 2006
This review is from: Ghost Stories (Audio CD)
I was very excited for the release of "Ghost Stories". I'm a huge Chantal fan and have all of her albums.

But I must say I'm a tad disappointed by this latest album. While it's still good, I just feel that she was all over the place with some of these songs. There are definitely some hits, but also a couple near-misses. It's definitely a slow-tempo album as well ; very mellow.

The standouts include "Ghosts Of You", "All I Can Do", "Wonderful", and the amazing and haunting "Asylum". But the minor missteps are "You Blame Yourself" and "Wendy House". While not awful, they're definitely acquired-tastes. The rest of the songs are somewhere between brilliant and mediocore.

So while "Ghost Stories" is overall somewhat of a disappointment, it's still a good album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just goes to show you..., Nov 26 2006

...that there's no accounting for taste.

I've listened to this CD about twelve, fifteen times now. And I'm quite stunned by the depth, the complexity of the songs. If she were an 'established international artist', this album might be heralded as something extraordinary, be given all manner of press, accolades, etc. As it is, I expect it'll get lost in the shuffle, mainly because it's too 'deep' for some people. (Like the assortment who have taken the time here to register their 'complaints'. Hence my review's title.)

Ms Kreviazuk deserves more kudos than she'll probably receive for this fine effort. A shame, really. But if you're aware of her life, the home she and her husband have created, you'll know that she's doing just fine, and is to be admired, envied even, because she's clearly living the life she's craved...and making the music she wants to make. More power to her.

5.0 out of 5 stars magnificent sensibility, Feb 1 2007

This is a revelation.

I was a standard fan of Kreviazuk previous work. Good quality pop song and professionnal production. An honest product but no more.

But I did not see this one coming !

This record puts Mrs. Kreviazuk in league of such artists as Kate Bush or Tori Amos.

But the lady have a touch of her own. Every songs had a good mix of strenght and sensibility. And the production work of Raine Maida is without reproach !

Not the ideal party album, but a good introspective trip to a different musical landscape! I recommand this to anyone who were tired of radiophonic crap and were looking for refreshing work.
