Product Description

From Amazon.com

As he did with Crumb, director Terry Zwigoff has created a soundtrack as eclectic and riveting as his movie subjects. The sounds of early jazz and blues play a crucial role in the events of Ghost World, and the music heard here is some of the best ever recorded. Skip James's classic "Devil Got My Woman" from 1931 may be the best-known work on this soundtrack, but it hardly steals the show. Three tracks from weird but riveting jazz-meets-calypso bandleader Lionel Belasco are included; the 70-year-old recordings are so original, they sound timeless. The same praise can be stated of film opener "Jaan Pehechaan Ho," a Bollywood rarity that has elements of surf music, funk, and garage rock. Of course, we also have to hear "Graduation Rap" and Blueshammer's "Pickin' Cotton Blues," two intentionally bad contemporary tracks that make the characters in the movie (and anyone listening to this soundtrack) feel out of place in today's pop culture. Zwigoff wisely fills out the disc with tracks from his personal 78 record collection, a mix of '20s and '30s string band and blues tunes that are seldom found in compilations (including great cuts by the Dallas String Band, Joe Calicott, and McGee Bros). The haunting "Theme from Ghost World," composed by David Kitay, finishes off this disc, perfectly capturing all the bittersweet moods found in the film. Recommended. --Jason Verlinde

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the Nighthawks Alone, Jun 29 2004
This review is from: Ghost World (Audio CD)
Here's a great CD, a neat mix of new, old and much in between. Now, I have to admit that I'm coming into this as a huge fan of early jazz - the more modern pieces on the album do nothing for me.

But ah, the vintage recordings are golden, and Vince Giordano's recreations are the kind of stuff I come back to again and again. The focus on Skip James serves as a great introduction to his work - I'm so glad to think of folks of the younger generations discovering these gems, as well as original 78rpm recordings, for the first time. Vince Giordano and his Nighthawks are as splendid as ever (my favorite band, hands down), featured in four selections. Their right-on-target renditions of great early jazz blend in perfectly with the original recordings featured - it's the real McCoy, only minus surface noise.

So sue me - the newer music contained just isn't my cup of tea. But the older stuff - now, that's manna from heaven in my book.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Word - FUNKDILLICIOUS!, April 1 2004

One word-FUNKDILLICIOUS! Loved the movie, loved the soundtrack even more! Early (and I do mean EARLY) blues and jazz mixed with an Indian track "Jaan Pehechaan Ho" and my fave "Devil Got My Woman". This soundtrack catches you not even watching the movie and sucks you in with the music alone. I had to watch the movie over again, since I was concentrating on the music... Excellent, albeit odd, soundtrack.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why wasn't "Pickin' Cotton Blues" nominated for an Oscar?, Jan 26 2004

This is a very eclectic soundtrack. I love the Bollywood song, and the old blues records are good, too. Should they have left the intentionally bad contemporary songs on the album? I think so. The "rap" song is really short, so it's not too intrusive. And the modern blues song works well as a parody of contemporary blues songs. Here is this white guy who never had to work hard a day in his life, singing about doing backbreaking work in the cotton fields. Trust me, it's funny. See the movie first, then decide if you want to get the soundtrack.
