Not for everyone!,

This review is from: Ghosts I-IV (Audio CD)
BE WARNED! This is NOT a typical NIN album! However, if you're willing to be challenged musically, it is a very intriguing and rewarding listen. All the songs each have a purpose and melody. Actually, calling them songs is a bit inaccurate. They're more...Beautifully crafted sections of noise. Trust me, if you like a challenge, buy this album. It was the best $20 or so I have ever spent on a CD.

Haunting Ambience,
By
This review is from: Ghosts I-IV (Audio CD)
Touching on NIN's deep ambient roots which have flavoured each of the NIN Halos and Trent's solo work - both lyrical and instrumental pieces have that use ambient backgrounds to create a feeling, a mood, a landscape that is in his head. Ghosts is just that - melodic paintings of various sonic landscapes - great to drive to, to relax to, take a bath to, do Tai Chi to, meditate to, walk to, or just take time to put some big ol headphones on and listen with all of yourself to picture what each piece is painting. The works on this Halo (Trent's term for a NIN album) vary from dirty sleezy trudges to beautiful falling petals of slow piano, from organic tours of alien forests to mechanicals ripping through reality. Pardon the poetry but that's what this is - sonic poetry. There's a sly use of samples (as in the technical term for sounds/instruments used to make music electronically) used in past songs, to bring the listener back to certain motifs or states of mind, and a bunch of new samples that will no doubt add to future songs (I hope!) and albums as a whole. My favorite part: getting lost in NIN's visions in each track. It's SO inspirational when I'm at a writer's block or painter's itch. My Least Fave part: I wish there were more albums like this ;) ok so I have no gripes with this album. Although don't fall asleep to it cause some tracks will wake you up with a start. No NIN halo was made to fall asleep to, as a general rule ;)

It is what it is...,
By Pablo (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews

Considering the price and the number of songs you get, it's hard to complain too much. I didn't have high expectations so it's easy for me to say 'it is what it is'. It's Trent trying to be experimental. Some are intriguing many are bland and boring. If you're expecting songs with lots of energy turn around and find another album. If you want intriguing, experimental background music you'll be hard pressed to find better value than $9.99 or $12.99 whatever the cheapest records store is selling it at. This won't be an album you put in the CD player and keep running. It's something to put on when you feel like a bit of a challenge. That said if you want something experimental but more well crafted try Aphex Twin or Download.
