Product Description

Can Ros Wynne, who has lost everything she thought defined her, find her true life—and her true love—surrounded by the lingering history of the once-grand Winter Manor?

When Ros unexpectedly inherits Winter Manor on the condition that she oversee the restoration of the remote and dilapidated house, it seems the perfect place for her to retreat from her recently failed relationship, the death of her mother, and the loss of her job. But Winter Manor is not entirely at rest. The echoes of its past reach forward into the present, and Ros’s life is perceptibly shaped by the lives—and loves—of the people who inhabited those rooms and corridors in the centuries before her.

Then Anna arrives. The architect—with her designer clothes, hot car, and air of supreme professionalism—is at first an unwelcome, if necessary, intrusion. But as Ros learns Anna’s truths, she finds solace from her past losses in their developing intimacy. And when their love is threatened, Ros must decide whether her own ghosts will forever define her, or if she can embrace her life for what it is—past, present, and future.

About the Author

Rebecca has lived in Nottingham, England, most of her life. She was accepted by the University of Oxford to read History, but soon found that something inside her rebelled against such a rarified academic environment and left to return to her hometown. She graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2004 with a degree in English Studies. She hopes to return to study at postgraduate level in the near future, with a specific interest in Romantic and nineteenth century literature from a gender/queer perspective. She is fascinated by the relationship between literature and culture, especially in a historical context, and the importance of fiction for representing the human experience. This is partly what inspires her to write.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very engaging read!, May 2 2011
By M. K. McGuire - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Ghosts of Winter (Paperback)
Buck is a refreshing new voice on the literary scene. The talent first glimpsed in last year's `Truths' continues to flourish in `Ghosts of Winter'. `Ghosts' tells the story of Ros at a pivotal moment in her life. Having lost her mother, her girlfriend and her job, she takes the only course she feels open to her; taking ownership of a rundown manor house left to her by a family friend. The once grand house is now dilapidated and decayed from years of neglect, but its grandeur and stateliness remain under the shabby facade. Ros is alternately attracted and intimidated by the talented and polished architect Anna who has been hired to oversee the renovations required by the bequest. The story nicely parallels the restoration of the house with the restoration of Ros's belief in herself. The characters are well developed and intensely real. Winter Manor, first built in 1746, is a fascinating character in the novel in its own right. Buck tells its story in an engaging series of historical vignettes, well spaced throughout the book. It's a wonderful reminder that the past is never truly gone, only lingering just below the surface of our present reality. Not just for history lovers, the book delivers a wonderfully satisfying romantic storyline as well. Buck is incredibly talented at writing romantic tension, and you will feel it. Buck is very adept with language that is never trite or clichéd. This book is a fantastic read, and I eagerly await her next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Angst - Development, Loved it!, May 2 2011

So I have been reading a good amount of lesbian literature later. I have just discovered Bold Strokes books and I am amazed I did not know about it before. Ghosts of Winter by Rebecca Buck is by far one of my favorite books by Bold Strokes. I do believe I have found a new favorite author in Buck as well since her story had a great deal of substance with a great deal of character development.

With that said let me break down the book; it is in first person by the main character Ros. She had a devastating last year and is finding a new way through life as everything is changing. The house (that the character is renovating) and the main character are almost a metaphor for one another since when one changed it helped the other and vise versa it's an interesting take.

The second main character Anna, I just loved; she was smart, sophisticated, mysterious, and gorgeous, etc. The way the author described her made her sound so real and believable I want to read the novel again just to get reacquainted with the characters.

I love angst in my stories - This story had a good amount of that and a lot of heart felt realistic moments that were adorable and believable. The character's interaction with each other added some of the best build up I've read between characters in a long time. Five stars! Great author who knows how to write.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Your Ordinary Romance, July 21 2011
By P. Bigelow - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Ghosts of Winter (Paperback)
Rebecca Buck introduces Ros Wynne, a teacher who has suffered the breakup of her long-time relationship with Francesca, the death of her mother, and her decision to quit her job all in the same year. When she unexpectedly inherits an 18th century manor house, Winter Manor, on the condition that she restore it to its previous glory, Ros decides that the renovation and restoration project is just what she needs to start her own life over again. She moves into the abandoned and dilapidated manor house and meets architect Anna Everest, who the previous owner wanted to run the renovation project. Anna, the consummate professional in designer clothes, expensive perfume and driving a very hot sports car, is hiding tragedies of her own.

At first, the two women's relationship is strictly professional, although Ros is harboring unprofessional thoughts about her beautiful architect. As they get to know one another, there is no doubt that there is an attraction between them that has nothing to do with the on-going renovation to Ros' manor house. However, Ros' lost confidence in herself rears its ugly head and she purposely drives Anna away. They must continue to work together, though. Only a potentially life-threatening accident brings them back together.

In the end, both characters get what she wants and needs, but they have to fight their own demons to get there.

This is no run-of-the-mill romance novel. Nor is it all about the renovation of Winter Manor. In fact, there are few details about the renovation given. This is all about Ros and the road she must travel to regain her self-esteem and self-confidence.

One of the best things about this book is the dynamics between Anna and Ros. Buck's dialogue variously sings with humor and angst in rapid succession.

Buck has given us a wonderfully written novel full of nuance. She is spot on in describing Ros' reticence and doubts about entering into a new romance with subtlety and without trying to overwhelm the reader with it. At the same time, she carefully and slowly allows the reader, and Ros, insight into the character of Anna.

Buck gives us glances of previous owners of the house by interrupting the flow of the story to insert these chapters. She might have been better served to tell these stories by having Ros go to the local library rather than dropping the reader out of her story of Ros and Anna.

Buck's novel will undoubtedly be in the small handful of the best books written in this genre in 2011.
