Book Description

This double biography depicts the lives of the famed Nova Scotia giantess Anna Swan (1846-88) and the celebrated Cape Breton giant Angus McAskill (1825-63). These two splendid and singular celebrities toured the world entertaining royalty and impressing audiences from town halls to palaces. Angus and Anna's Scottish influences were deeply embedded from childhood and although it was unlikely the two ever met, the similarities in their lives were uncanny. During their adventures, both giants worked with and met many unusual characters. Both met Queen Victoria. Anna married an American giant and the two toured as "The Tallest Married Couple in the World." The book explores the causes of gigantism and how this rare condition shaped the lives and personalities of these two Nova Scotians. Anna and Angus were born to normal-sized, hard-working parents and grew up in rural surroundings but rose to great stardom on the world stage. Both were regarded for their kind hearts and compassion for others. They have left a meaningful message for readers that resonates more than a century after their deaths. Both are honoured at museums in Nova Scotia that house their artifacts. Thousands of people flock to these sites to learn about these great giants.

2.0 out of 5 stars Repetitive and disappointing, Oct 19 2009

This review is from: Giants of Nova Scotia (Paperback)
I am an avid reader of books about unusual people, especially giants, since one of my closest friends was World's Tallest Woman Sandy Allen (1955-2008). However, "Giants of Nova Scotia" leaves a lot to be desired. First of all, the editing was sloppy (nonexistant?) -- they must have run out of commas when they printed this book. Some paragraphs jumped from one subject to another and had no cohesiveness. Certain comments/statistics were repeated just a few sentences from each other. The author, Shirley Irene Vacon, would throw in people's names with no explanation as to who they are. If you're really diligent, you can check the bibliography in the back of the book and find out most of them are authors who have already written about Anna Swan and Angus McAskill, both together and in separate biographies. So why do we need another book on this subject? There was so much quoting from other authors that Vacon didn't have to do a whole lot of work -- she just used their stuff. The photos are just OK -- most of them look like xeroxes. I realize that photos of these 19th-century giants probably weren't very clear to begin with, but I've seen some in other books that were better. This is a very mediocre effort from a first-time author, but it could have been better if cleaned up by a competent editor. For anyone interested, please check out my book about Sandy Allen, "World's Tallest Woman: The Giantess of Shelbyville High."
