In Frank 's seductively crafted universe (introduced in last year's Jacob: The Nightwalkers), demons aren't the clawed horrors of myth (unless they're possessed by the book's villainous necromancers); they're handsome, proud, sensuous and decidedly ambivalent about the world of mortals. Demons have a thousands-year-old rule forbidding them from coupling with humans, who aren't made to survive sex with the charismatic Nightwalkers; male protagonist Gideon, an ancient healer demon (who, naturally, doesn't look a day over 35), has spent eight years in self-imposed exile after attempting to break that law. Recently returned, guilt-wracked Gideon is finally drawn to the true object of his desire: the even-more-forbidden Magdelegna, young sister of hot-tempered demon king Noah. Though Magdelegna's kin raise hell over the May-December romance (at 250 years old, Magdelegna is barely an adult), the pair's breathtaking sex scenes raise more. Regrettably, the complex characterization that humanizes Frank's paranormal characters (including an urbane vampire, a sensual yet celibate lycanthrope queen and a couple of neo-Druids) doesn't extend to the necromancers, who remain faceless, one-dimensional foes throughout. The plot's central conflict between good and evil is therefore lacking the psychological depth, vivid detail and personal chemistry that make its sensitive, scorching romantic components so compelling. Patience may be required at the outset, as Frank provides a lot of backstory. I'll sum up the quality of the writing with this quote from page 190 "He manipulated his eyesight until he could not only see clearly in the darkness, but could see at any distance he wished."Yeah, he and Steve Austin (the Six Million Dollar Man) could be great buds. I liked the first book in the series because it was an interesting paranormal society and a bit of decent sex. This book doesn't explore the society much - just a little bit of strained Demon relationships - and over half of it is flowery unconsummated sex that, I assume, was supposed to be suspenseful but was not. (Oh, and the brother-sister relationship between Noah and Legna is just plain cringe-worthy - they act more like ex-lovers than siblings.) If you liked Feehan's Dark series, you'll like this. If you like Ward's or Frost's vampire series, you'll find this particularly cheesy and the sex flowery.

Gideon is a Body Demon. He is the most revered Ancient in all of Demon society, past and present. He is the best medic; therefore, when King Noah asks him to care for Bella during her pregnancy, he instantly agrees. Bella is part Human and part Druid. She is still getting used to her hybrid powers. Since an Imprinting between a Demon and a Druid has not happened in so very long, Gideon is the obvious choice to care for her. Everyone believes Gideon to be cold hearted. This is as Gideon wants it. In fact, Gideon cracked nine years ago and stole a kiss from Magdelegna "Legna" in the gardens and has not forgiven himself since. Jacob, Bella's mate, is an Enforcer and had to stop Gideon from attacking a human due to that single kiss. Gideon has been in a self-imposed exile ever since, only coming back to do as King Noah requested of him. But coming back meant seeing Legna again. Somehow she keeps him off his mark. She never reacts the way he logically expects her to. And in the nine years of being away, his need for her has no lessened.Magdelegna is a Demon of the Mind. She is an empath and consummate diplomat. Gideon's kiss nine years ago left her wanting. When Gideon spurned her, Legna was humiliated. Now that Gideon is back, Legna plans to keep her distance from him. This is not easy since the medic seems to notice something is wrong with her. Truth is, Legna is scared of how rapidly her powers are maturing since a necromancer nearly killed her a few months ago. If not for Jacob and Bella, she would be dead. But her growing powers makes Legna wonder if she is destined to still change into a monster, even though she had been rescued. Eventually Legna and Gideon clash, only to find themselves Imprinting. But as Legna and Gideon begin to explore each other and their new Imprinting, attacks begin. Someone has learned about the reemerging of Druids among the Demons. Bella and her unborn child have become targets. Problem is figuring out who. Queen Siena of the Lycanthropes and Prince Damien of the Vampires step in to help. History with both races are shaky. Can they be trusted to help? Once again I am amazed at how well written the story is and how believable the characters are. To make life simple, please see my review on the first book of the series, Jacob. My opinion on this writer has not changed. . . The only reason that I read its sequel Gideon is that I had bought this item brand new of the shelf before I realized it was 2nd in a series. I was lucky enough to find the first in a used book store. My only comment is that if you can't borrow this book, at least buy it from a secondhand book store. This is what I'm going to do if I should see the 3rd & 4rth book in the series, after all there were four main characters from the onset, Jacob, Gidion, Elijah, and their king Noah. I'm curious enough to want to see what happens with these characters, but not enough to pay full price. . .
