Review

"So convincing a picture of the 18th century that we feel transported ourselves, this first book of a planned trilogy of time-travel adventures is skilled, engrossing and irresistible. The reader, like the protagonists, will find it hard to return to the present." -- Nicolette Jones, The Sunday Times, Children's Book of the Week

"A time-slip novel, deftly handled. The year 1763 is beautifully evoked, as is the present day...Hard to imagine it being done better. A real find, leaving you hungry for more." -- Philip Ardagh, The Guardian

"The novel abounds with period detail, effortlessly woven into the plot...Tanglewreck, like Gideon the Cutpurse...is partly a satire on our current perception that we all have too little time to change the nature of reality, rather than our own greed and impatience. Neither should be missed." -- Amanda Craig, The Times

"The cliff-hanger ending leaves you longing for the next book." -- The Independent, 10 Best Books for ages 8-12

"Great fun and a really good adventure..." -- Kate Scarborough, The Guardian

"A thrilling time-slip story." -- Funday Times

"...a wonderful time-travelling tale...a brilliant introduction to this period of history, evoked with gorgeous attention to detail and language." -- The Book Magazine

"...a thrilling tale of dashing highwaymen and sinister villains. Full of flavour and witty flourishes, this should be a huge summer favourite." -- The Bookseller, Bookseller's Choice

"There is much to recommend in this book. The 18th century is vividly and lovingly brought to life...There are many excellent characters (among them a truly repellent villain called The Tar Man), a swift pace and an absorbing plot. It's convincing and exciting and I loved it." -- Publishing News, Bookseller's Choice

"Buckley-Archer may very well give J. K. Rowling a run for her money. This wonderfully rich and complex novel, written in lyrical and vivid language, is destined to be a classic. History interweaves with science, social issues in both centuries are thrown in; yet what readers will remember most is a fast-paced plot with a cliff-hanger ending and multi-dimensional characters who continue to inhabit their thoughts long after the book is closed. With appeal for reluctant and advanced readers, this novel is a rare gem." -- School Library Journal, Starred Choice

Book Description

Previously published as GIDEON THE CUTPURSE

1763

Gideon Seymour, thief and gentleman, hides from the villainous Tar Man. Suddenly the sky peels away like fabric and from the gaping hole fall two curious-looking children. Peter Schock and Kate Dyer have fallen straight from the twenty-first century, thanks to an experiment with an antigravity machine. Before Gideon and the children have a chance to gather their wits, the Tar Man takes off with the machine -- and Peter and Kate's only chance of getting home. Soon Gideon, Peter, and Kate are swept into a journey through eighteenth-century London and form a bond that, they hope, will stand strong in the face of unfathomable treachery.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great story, one with substance, Jan 16 2009
This review is from: Gideon Trilogy # 1: Time Travelers (Paperback)
This is a very well paced story. Instead of simply action sequences, there are relationships that are formed nicely, with different characters of a wide variety throughout. The story is nice also, with an interesting twist on time travel, etc. There are some educational qualities to this book- many details about the 17th century that children would find interesting. However, one word of warning: this book has been previously released in hardcover as 'Gideon the Cutpurse'. I don't know why the title was changed, but it was. The next book was supposed to be called 'The Tar Man' but was instead titled 'The Time Thief'. All in all a good story!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Time Travellers- Honest and Unbiased, Dec 20 2010

This review is from: Gideon Trilogy # 1: Time Travelers (Paperback)
On the cover of this book and it's two successors: 'The Time Thief' and 'The Time Quake', there are gushing quotes about how this trilogy will "give J. K. Rowling a run for her money" and how these books are "for kids who love Harry Potter".
Nonsense. These books are not intended to give Rowling a run for her money, but you a run for yours by sucking you in with Potter promises. Books must stand on their own, and such a low ploy as using a popular work is cheap and I find, deplorable. I was put off by those statements, but this book, as well as the trilogy, is really quite fun children's fiction.
Kate Dyer and Peter Schock, through a series of small incidents end up in a rather large incident- the 18th century, England. They are stuck back in time and have no idea how they got there or how they will get home. To top it off, there are cold-hearted villains, a complete lack of deoderant, and enough adventure to make you hold on to your hats.
These are nicely chunky books, and the age would be 9-12 for kids. A great winter read, and it is obvious that the author has done her research. All in all, a fun adventure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Has Been A Hit In Our House, Mar 23 2008
This review is from: Gideon Trilogy # 1: Time Travelers (Paperback)
I've read this to my [...] son. He has been totally captivated with the novel. It isn't action-paced, but the quandary of the main characters, and the slipping back and forth between present day and the past really captivated both of us. It also has made him really fascinated, and he really gets, what it means to live in a world 250 years in the past. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who's looking for something that puts their child back into the British world of past and present that was so accessible in the Harry Potter novels.
