BEWARE - Gidget DVDs are pan & scan,
This review is from: Gidget (1959) / Gidget Goes Hawaiian / Gidget Goes to Rome - Set (DVD)
I was all set to pre-order this DVD set of the first three Gidget films when I learned that they are pan & scan, not widescreen. All three films were made in widescreen, and the original "Gidget" was filmed in Panavision--meaning that the pan & scan version will cut off 1/2 of the picture. (I'm not sure if the other two Gidget films were Panavision (2.35) or 1.85 widescreen.)If you're thinking about buying this as a permanent part of your DVD library, you may want to wait until Columbia does a proper job on the DVD. Even if you don't have a widescreen televison now, you will before too much longer...

Wonderful Movies, So-So DVD Production,
By
This review is from: Gidget (1959) / Gidget Goes Hawaiian / Gidget Goes to Rome - Set (DVD)
Those of you who have the videos, please hold on to them. I watched the first dvd and realized that this movie is very poorly sliced. For example when Gidget & Moondoggie are in the coffee shop they slice it so that Gidget is cut off. She looks bewildered and she rolls her eyes which is present on the video, but not the dvd. There is no reason why Moondoggie had to have lots of empty space behind him. Sorry, but that's really ridiculous! This is a set that has cheated the viewers because the movies are not presented in widescreen. I hope the producers will give us the WHOLE movies soon.

Fond Memories,
By YoungCub "youngcub" (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gidget (1959) / Gidget Goes Hawaiian / Gidget Goes to Rome - Set (DVD)
I grew up with these movies and in fact have two out of three of them on VHS already. My daughters who are just entering their twenties enjoy them with me. James Darren was my teen idol, and Sandra Dee was so sweet it was a joy to watch. Now Gidget goes Hawaiian still gave me James Darren, but I also got to enjoy the dance and music of a variety of other stars, it takes me back to a softer time. I can't say I enjoyed Gidget goes to Rome as much, but the scenery was worth it.
