LITTLE BUDDY! LITTLE BUDDY! I'VE GOT SEASON TWO,
By
This review is from: Gilligan's Island: The Complete Second Season (DVD)
The hilarious castaways and the loveable goofball Gilligan are back. Season two of Gilligan's Island switches from black & white to color. The three hour tour continues with all 32 second season episodes and a few bonus features. The bonus features include a season introduction by the Professor and the shows creator Sherwood Schwartz. There is also a commentary on episode #3 "The Little Dictator" by Sherwood Schwartz. So once again there are no cast interviews or bloopers or featurettes from the shows stars and that's a major disappointment.
The video transfer is really great; the sound is clean and crisp and it sounds great on my home theater system. The colors are absolutely sharp and vibrant. Somehow the studio crammed season two onto 3 double sided discs and the picture is still outstanding. These episodes in my opinion never looked this good when I watched the show on television. A show without sex, violence or swearing how can it possibly be entertaining? Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale..........just enjoy it! Disc # 1, Side A 1: Gilligan's Mother-in-Law 2: Beauty Is as Beauty Does 3: The Little Dictator 4: Smile, You're on Mars Camera 5: The Sweepstakes 6: Quick Before It Sinks *Special Features - Gilligan's Island: Season 2 Introduction - The Little Dictator Commentary by Creator/Producer Sherwood Schwartz Disc # 1, Side B 7: Castaways Pictures Presents 8: Agonized Labor 9: Nyet, Nyet - Not Yet 10: Hi-Fi Gilligan 11: The Chain of Command 12: Don't Bug the Mosquitoes Disc # 2, Side A 13: Gilligan Gets Bugged 14: Mine Hero 15: Erika Tiffany Smith to the Rescue 16: Not Guilty 17: You've Been Disconnected 18: The Postman Cometh Disc # 2, Side B 19: Seer Gilligan 20: Love Me, Love My Skipper 21: Gilligan's Living Doll 22: Forward March 23: Ship Ahoax 24: Feed the Kitty Disc # 3, Side A 25: Operation - Steam Heat 26: Will the Real Mr. Howell Please Stand Up? 27: Ghost a Go-Go 28: Allergy Time 29: The Friendly Physician 30: "V" for Vitamins Disc # 3, Side B 31: Mr. and Mrs.??? 32: Meet the Meteor

Laurel and Hardy on Gilligan's Island,
By
This review is from: Gilligan's Island: The Complete Second Season (DVD)
This is Season Two of the innocuous and utterly harmless family comedy Gilligan's Island, for the /65-/66 TV lineup. As I watch I can't help but compare the great comedy team of Laurel and Hardy to Gilligan and the Skipper. As The Boys last feature had them stranded on a desert island with others in the Pacific,so too we have the Skipper,Gilligan and the rest stranded on an island in the Pacific.More importantly not only are their sight and verbal gags VERY reminiscent of The Boys but Alan Hale Jr.as the skipper seemingly channels Oliver Hardy with his exasperated camera look, the finger pointing to make a point and Hardy's overall body language. Not too unusual as Hale's father Alan Sr.worked with The Boys in one of their best features "Our Relations" way back when. The makers also knew the fat and skinny persona's were always good for a laugh in and of itself and always a goldmine of gags;and Bob Denver and Alan Hale Jr.sure did a great job at it.
This season we find the castaways in colour as they switch over from the black and white of season one.One wonders how the professor always came up with the inventions he did, without proper equipment or electricity to use to make them or the endless supply of books he always seemed to have on hand on almost any subject! The group misses being rescued by a hair several times during the course of season two and always ends up back on the island. You will also notice the radio not only has a peculiar habit of answering back but issues bulletins that pertain to the castaways whenever they are tuned in.And how does that radio keep running so well and long without running out of juice? These and many other mysteries are easily solved:it is just a TV show. The humour throughout these shows is totally age indifferent and one wishes,as I have said ad nauseum, there were shows on television today that an entire family could sit around and watch. We are all the lesser for it,believe me. Technically this set has been transferred well onto DVD as the colours are crisp and clear and with film grain kept to a minimum. However they are unfortunately on three dreaded double sided DVDs,which has been a particular problem for me.My last review of Gilligan's Island was for season one way back in May of 2007 and it has taken me that long to find a set that was not scuffed or scratched when I bought it!There was obviously shoddy workmanship and quality control by the makers of these sets when they were first made.I just hope you,my good friends, have had better luck than I have.Who knows when I will be able to obtain Season Three for a review...if ever? The only extras are a one ep commentary by creator Schwartz and a season intro by Russel Johnson(the professor) and creator Sherwood Scwartz. Ahh the innocent days of the 50s and 60s when there was just plain fun-family television viewing with the likes of The Beverly Hillbillies,Green Acres,Petticoat Junction and this show Gilligan's Island;its' season two.For a show the entire family can enjoy,I recommend Gilligan's Island...any season.
