4.0 out of 5 stars cello pieces disappointing, Jun 12 2004

This review is from: Ginastera: Complete Music for Piano/Piano chamber ensembles (Audio CD)
In other reviews there are many glorious comments of Barbara Nissman's playing, and they are well deserved. However, this is not a good CD to buy if you are looking for good recordings of the two cello pieces on this CD. Slow tempos, sloppy articulation, missed notes, incorrect rhythms unfortunately abound in the playing of Aura Natola-Ginastera in both the recordings of the Pampeana No. 2 and Cello Sonata. Being the wife of Alberto Ginastera herself I'm sure she has great insight into his music, but it seems as though her technical playing ability is not on a level to play these pieces well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive Ginastera, Feb 16 2002

This review is from: Ginastera: Complete Music for Piano/Piano chamber ensembles (Audio CD)
Barbara Nissman deserves more attention from record producers and lovers of Art music alike! Her performances of Ginastera's piano music are wholly idiomatic and pretty much...perfect. As a music student who has performed the Piano Sonata no.1 Op.22, Nissman's rendition is a textbook performance. Perhaps Santiago Rodriguez's performance is more overtly "Latin" in the outer movements, while Anton Nel's "Ruvido ed ostinato" is slightly more energetic. However, it is Nissman's op. 22 that is the most convincing as a whole . Her understanding of the macro and micro structures in this repertoire is unsurpassed - her climaxes for instance, are masterfully timed to perfection and she's not predictable. And as for the absolute rhythmic precision this music calls for, she is the only pianist who fully delivers. I return to this disc often as the musical insights are extremely rewarding and fulfilling. My only wish is that there was more repertoire more readily available on disc by this most outstanding artist.
