Product Description

Double vinyl LP pressing. 2012 release from the Jazz/Pop pianist and vocalist. Glad Rag Doll is an exhilarating and adventurous exploration of new sounds, new instrumentation and new musicians. It stars a singer and piano player, filled with mischief, humor and a renewed sense of tenderness and intimacy. The record reveals itself at that remarkable vanishing point in time where all music; swinging, rocking and taboo, collide with songs of longing, solace and regret. All are made new again in a vaudeville of Krall's own imagining. It is at once a major departure and a natural progression for the gifted musician. Diana simply calls the album, "a song and dance record."

5.0 out of 5 stars pleasing and revelling... Oct. 3 2012
By Marc

Very new ground for her and so different for her fans...don't expect
the usual jazz she does...but, it's more like a lounge sound to it,
and I have to admit that the quality of the recording and the personnel
that plays with her is top notch...very late night feel music to it...
nice audacity from her to kick the same old same old... recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars new direction Nov. 11 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I like this album.new direction new feeling. she goes the blues/jazz side, like other great singers.lots of guitar and piano, deep voice that is good for the blues. don't think every song or album is going to jazz. Variety is the thing that makes her better .

2.0 out of 5 stars I'm saddened and frustrated.... Oct. 30 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Let me begin by saying that I've been a huge, huge fan of Diana Krall for many years, so I was eagerly anticipating the release of this album and confidently went ahead and pre-ordered it. Once I heard it, I couldn't help but be overcome by disappointment despite the fact that I badly wanted to like it and listened to it over and over, hoping to hear what all the great reviews were about. My problem is this: The thing that I've always loved most about Diana, that set her work apart from everyone else, was her marvelous talent as a jazz pianist. Like everyone else, I also love her exquisite voice and the classy elegance of her persona. On this release, however, it seems that the goal was to rob her of that elegance and downplay her pianistic skill. Not that I don't appreciate the cover art...Diana plays the sultry, sexy role beautifully and I admit to quite enjoying the photos (like any other red-blooded North American guy!)...But the whole presentation seems to lack the sophistication that has always been Diana's stock in trade. Musically speaking, on a few of the cuts Diana's gorgeous voice is allowed to shine through, but on many of them she is all but drowned out in the mix by a clunky, ham-fisted accompaniment featuring none-too-subtle guitars, drums, and other vintage-sounding instruments; good for historical interest, perhaps, but long superseded by modern innovations (with good reason). What little piano playing we hear similarly lacks Diana's usual grace and wit, and sounds as though it was performed on an ancient, out-of-tune Legion Hall piano. I'm sorry, but it's hard for me to imagine that this is really how Diana herself would wish to present her talents to the world. Read more ›

2.0 out of 5 stars my least favorite album Feb. 14 2013
Format:Audio CD
This is my least favorite album so far. It neither shows her skills as a pianist nor does it show her great voice. It's fairly dull and unexciting. There was quite a hype when it came out including the cover photo but that's the most exciting part of the entire album. Hoping for more good Jazz in the albums to come.

2.0 out of 5 stars EGO! Dec 21 2012

Please stick to what you are good at and that is JAZZ! One massive ego (Elvis) in the family is enough!

2.0 out of 5 stars Might trade it in Nov. 26 2012
By Catherine E. Dalgarno TOP 1000 REVIEWER

Very disappointed in this disc. I really like some of the previous outings much better. The songs were boring and too much the same. After hearing this disc i decided not to go to the concert coming to town next year. I didn't want to hear these songs at all.

I just loved this CD. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. Many great tunes to dance in the kitchen to. I feel Diana has outdone herself and I would highly recommend this CD.
