If there's one thing film producers and record executives like more than Success, it's Success Part II. Thus when Ridley Scott's high-tech sword 'n' sandal epic Gladiator scored both Golden Globe wins and Academy Award nods for Best Film and Best Score, it was a sure bet that another volume of Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard's music for the film couldn't be far behind. While not exactly leftovers, the tracks here sometimes point to the fact that there wasn't enough fresh material to fill this volume out, hence we get some remixed cues, a handful of familiar music with dramatic dialogue excerpts edited and superimposed (or misplaced, with decidedly mixed results), and even a beat-heavy, dance club mix of "Now We Are Free". With a little over half an hour of entirely fresh material and some souvenir dialogue snippets over the rest, there's enough here to please Gladiator die-hards. Also of note: guitarist Heitor Pereira's flamenco-flavored flourishes are better showcased throughout while "The Gladiator Waltz" serves up one of Zimmer's original synth demos (with a dash of Russell Crowe dialogue upfront), a dramatic amp-up of Holst's "Mars, the Bringer of War" that's a prime example of the composer's state-of-the-art digital orchestral conjuring. --Jerry McCulley

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original score release Dec 14 2002
Format:Audio CD
Usually when a soundtrack gets another release with more music from the film, the result is not as good as the original soundtrack release itself. This is a perfect example of that, as the original soundtrack was outstanding, while this one is still good, but nowhere close to the other one. As the first one contained music mainly from Hans Zimmer, with Lisa Gerrard on vocals, this one contains music from a lot of other composers as well as Zimmer, with lines from the movie heard within some of the tracks by Russell Crowe, Richard Harris, Joaquin Phoenix, Oliver Reed, Connie Nielsen, and Djimon Hounsou. The liner notes contain comments by Hans Zimmer with a breakdown of each track and Lisa Gerrard. Most of the music you have heard before on the first release anyway, but some new music is present, as well as some music that was never featured in the film. There are 2 mixed versions of "Now We Are Free" that didn't make the final cut. Heitor Pereira gives a great guitar solo in "Maximus". Composer Jeff Rona contributed to "Marrakesh Marketplace". Klaus Badelt, in addition to helping with additional music from the first soundtrack, also helped in some of the tracks for this release. To describe most of the music, just listen to the other Gladiator soundtrack, as it is much better anyway and similar to this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT SOUNDTRACK WITH REFRESHING TWISTS! April 19 2002
By Elena
Format:Audio CD
I got this CD for Easter and have been listening to it ever since whether I'm washing the dishes, doing homework, or whatever! It has some new and already heard music but with new twists and turns and added in dialogue from the movie that actually cleverly goes quite good along with the music. And if you enjoyed Lisa Gerrard's stunning and powreful voice in the first soundtrack get ready for another new stunning and powerful peice sung by Lisa Gerrard on track 8,"Rome is the Light." Their are also two other peices sung by her that are basically the same from the first soundtrack but slightly diffrent and somewhat cooky but nonetheless fun-(track 2-"Now we are Free,Juba's Mix" and track 18-"NOw we are Free, Maximus Mix.") Oh also inside of the booklet thingy they give notes of each track from Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard along with clip pictures from the movie. So to summarize everything up, It's a good and refreshing new soundtrack but you might just find yourself switching back and forth between the two soundtracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm Addicted! Aug. 13 2001
Format:Audio CD
I'm obsessed with Gladiator, it's a well known fact! I've seen the movie 16.5 times (I first saw it May 2001). I have both soundtracks, the DVD, tons of posters, a Gladiator desktop and screensaver, books, etc. My friends went so far as to throw me a 'Gladiator' party since I'm moving. We all dressed up in togas, watched Gladiator, talked about how hot Maximus is, and listened to 'Gladiator' music. The cake even had a scanned in wax picture of Maximus on it! Oh yeah, we also have an entire notebook about 'Gladiator' that we call the 'Maximus Notebook' that contains quotes, articles, pictures, and entries. Yeah, I guess you could say we're obsessed.
The reason I mentioned all this is because I got this second Gladiator soundtrack from them at the party. It's *excellent*! Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrrd did some great work on this soundtrack, I'm very impressed! I really didn't expect the second soundtrack to be as perfect as the first, but it was! This music is all emotional and moving and has great beats and a great variety! I LOVE how they added dialogue from the movie, now I can listen to Maximus, Lucilla, Proximo, Juba, and Commodus talk while a fall asleep, ahh! lol
Hans and Lisa did two great remixes of 'Now We Are Free'. one is Juba's Mix and one is Maximus Mix. I think the Maximus one is better, but Juba's Mix is excellent too. The dialogue on this soundtrack is interesting because they use different music while they're talking instead of the same music they used in the movie, so that keeps this soundtrack, fresh, new, and interesting!
Duduk of the North is great! It's really beautiful and goes quite well with the whole theme.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good! June 10 2001
Format:Audio CD
I heard that there would come a new album, and I was totally crazy of luck, because the first was so good. I read some other reviews and they said it was bad,but I still bought it to hear it. And I found it surprisingly good in sound. I am also one of the people that does not find the dialogue annoying (1: there are few times there are dialogue and it only lasts for short 2:the music is not at it`s best when the dialogue appears). It begins with a track that didn`t made it to the film, which is a dark theme for the germans and it makes me imagine a volcanic landscape. The second track,an alternate version of Now We Are Free is actually better than the final version with all african sounds!Track 3 is the serious talk track and the only time I find the dialogue annoying. Homecoming is one of the great cues I missed from the film, and it reminds much of the Lion King. Track 5 is another great track that I missed - I love the egyptian theme of it. Track 6 is one of the real highlights of the score and it is an alternate of "The Might of Rome". I love the battle theme, that (again)makes me imagine a dinosaurian landscape. Secrets features the Commodus theme, which is a little mysterious. Rome is Light is one of the highlights, and it is totally innocent and very beautifull. Track 9 & 10 are the baddest tracks, and also the ones that can be skipped (fortunatley they are very short). Track 11 does feature a drum theme which is a little playfull. But the best track is Gladiator Waltz, that is a synth demo version of "The Battle". In the film,it was the main cue that I missed when he tried to escape. That`s definitly a 5-star rate track. Track 13 is a little fun to hear. The Mob is a perfect action track. Busy Little Bee is a very ethnic track and one of my favourites. Read more ›
