After seeing some of the reviews, I decided to go ahead and buy this movie as well. I was very pleased and enjoyed the movie. It's nothing serious like the first two Rocky movies, but light hearted action fun. It pretty quick paced so you don't get bored. I'd compare it more to being similar to Rocky IV in terms of pacing. The story is simple enough about a young, white boxer who, through a turn of bad luck, finds himself in the poorhouse and has to box to settle his dad's gambling debts. The acting is believable unlike the recent Star Wars Attack of the Clones fiasco. Cuba Gooding and James Marshall both put in great performances. The boxing, although a little over the top sometimes,is still great to see although I'd like to have seen longer training sequences. The quality of the dvd picture is great as well. What they don't mention on Amazon's techincal data is that the dvd has both a widescreen and standard full format presentation on either side of the disc so you can watch the movie whatever way you want. I'd definitely recommend this disc for the boxing movie enthusiast.

Tommy Riley (James Marshall) goes to a different school and is immediately bullied around and threatened by several of the school's students. After getting in a street fight, Pappy Jack (Robert Loggia) notices Tommy's strong and fierce punch and invites him to be a boxer. Tommy was formerly a boxing champion before coming to this school and his record is undefeated. This town is full of gangs and violence, and one day Tommy helps a black boxer named Lincoln (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), and they then have a good friendship. Tommy is now making good money being a boxer and he has some friends, but something just doesn't seem right.
"Gladiator" is an exciting boxing and drama movie. What makes it so great is not only the exciting fights, but the great acting by everybody in the movie, mainly James Marshall, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Tommy's promoter, Jimmy Horn (Brian Dennehy). If you like exciting boxing movies that have a plot or just great movies in general, I recommend getting "Gladiator."

this is not the Ridley Scott directed epic starring Russel Crowe.it's
something entirely different.this movie is vastly entertaining.it's
more than just a boxing movie.it's about heart and determination and
beating the odds, and the power of friendship.usually theses kinds of
movies are schmaltzy and sappy, with that rah ,rah, rah attitude.you
know,we can all succeed and everything is hunky dory.and let's face
it,that isn't always reality.but somehow,this movie avoids that clichéd
feel and succeeds.maybe because there's also some realism within
it.there is a heartbreaking scene in the movie which brings some
sobriety to the picture.the fight scenes are well done and quite brutal
at times.the movie also has a good soundtrack, with some great
songs, which really elevate the emotional aspect of the movie, but it's
not overdone.overall,i liked it a lot.for me "Gladiator" is a terrific
film.I give it a 5/5

This is one of the rare finds in the world of cinema, a true unknown classic, set in the modern world of boxing. Directed by Rowdy Herrington, and the best thing by far that he ever did. The movie stars James Marshall, Robert Loggia, Cuba Gooding Jr and Brian Dennehy, who all put in best performances. This movie is relatitively unknown and did fair at the box office, never the less has a great story, good characterizations, solid performances by all, and above all, excellant direction. Absolutley one of the films of the that year, and a film not to miss. A true classic!

This film is as good if not better than the latest film of the same name. It does not depend on special effects (in the form of a fat budget) to keep you interested, I just cannot stop whatching it, I must have seen it over 50 times. It is with out a doubt one of those films you can whatch over and over (like "Starwars"). Everyone I know who has seen it has gone out and bought it. The story line and the acting are excellent, they really hit the nail on the head with the realism.

This is one of my favorite movies, it has stood the test of watching over and over and still holds up. A truley great story with wonderful performances by James Marshall, Cuba Gooding, Brian Dennenhy, Robert Loggia and Ossie Davis. This movie is perfect in every respect-Good acting, direction and story! Its always amazed me that Rowdy Herrington the director has not gone on to greater achievments-this movie which is wonderful may be his crowning glory and should not be missed.

Certainly, this movie is not up with Rocky and other great boxing movies, but if you look deep into this movie as you're watching it; it takes on more meaning. The characters in this movie were decent but nto great. This movie reminded me of Rocky V, but don't get me wrong; it's nothing liek it. This movie had drama, action, and some world issues in it. To make a long story short I think this movie is worth renting so check it out.
