One of the most exhilarating debut albums in a long time, WU LYF's "Go Tell Fire to the Mountain" bounces around in this weird musical melting pot where TV on the Radio joins forces with Animal Collective to jam in an empty grain silo with My Morning Jacket. Throw some Flaming Lips randomness in the mix and several bona-fide ear catching melodies, and its one of the most exciting albums to be heard in years.
Maybe I'm overreacting but I love everything about the album. The lead singer half sings, half screams and a lot of the lyrics I am not sure I comprehend, but I don't care. The energy and passion in every wailed note is pure rock 'n' roll (in a cathartic way), exalting the same powerful emotion whether loving you forever or spitting blood. The drums are huge, the guitars chime and then attack and then take off in solos, and then, when you least expect it, the piano takes over and the mood is nice and chill...for awhile.
It sounds raw, so be prepared. Organs battle for space with drums while the bass tries to hold it down underneath, and at times, everything seems to blend together into one cacophonous din. This is a good thing, however. This album is about spirit, energy, playing with emotion and letting the music take over and just happen.
Sorry if I made it sound too hippie. BUT I LOVE THIS ALBUM!
