1.0 out of 5 stars Deloria poses as an intellectual...., Jun 17 1999
This review is from: God Is Red (Paperback)
This book is written by a man that is so radical many Natives disagree with him. His comments are biased and often wild accustaions. He doesn't promote "religious freedom" and tolerance... but rather STATES BLUNTLY that Christianity is INFERIOR to the religion of the Natives. I get the feeling he doesn't truly comprehend Christianity. THe "examples" of Christianity that he gives are taken from the minority, small percentage of the worst christian population (of course). After reading the book I learned all the reasons he dislikes Christianity and none of Native religion. I support Native actions to be recognized and I condemn breaches of treaties by the USA government...... however, Mr. Deloria is a bit out of reality. As he writes: "Future explorers from other planets will walk this early wasteland and marvel at our stupidity and wonder why we could not accept the reality of our own finitude."

4.0 out of 5 stars God Is Red, White, and Blue, Jan 28 2009

This review is from: God Is Red (Paperback)
I first picked up this book from a used bookstore because I found the title interesting. For many months this book remained on my book shelve collecting dust. Recently, I picked this book up and began to read it. I was not disappointed.

God is Red is not for the faint of heart. Although the author may be harsh at times about his views and epistemology concerning Christianity, given the history, I feel that his perspective is not only needed but lightening as it provided me with a needed dose of reality especially when I grew up as a bleeding heart Roman Catholic and taught that Christianity was the only path to God.

Vine Deloria Jr., brings a needed eye-opener to religion and forces his readers to think about alternative perspectives and epistemologies of religion, community and acceptance. I do not feel that his book seeks to convert but to teach an important lesson so that we do not repeat our mistakes in the future.

I encourage everyone to read this book with an open mind and to save all judgment until the end.

I do warn all readers that the first chapter can be heavy on history, which almost caused me to put the book down. If you can deal with this crucial history and background you will not be disappointed. I hope you enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent..., July 22 2002

This review is from: God Is Red (Paperback)
Well, after years of the Western tradition doing 'comparative' studies of other cultures it finally gets analyzed in the same manner by someone from a different culture. Deloria is a well-known member of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe who is also an author, scholar, philosopher and lawyer. Utilizing precisely the same methods practiced by the Christian-based, scientific-minded culture perpetuated in our present Universities he deftly slices open Christianity from his point of view.

Deloria's main thesis is to remind us that "we are a part of nature, not a transcendent species with no responsibility to the natural world." He makes this point in numerous ways, often in a very witty manner. I have no doubt this makes those entrenched in our Western condition very uncomfortable but it is healthy medicine for the insanity of the times. I also have no doubt his views make those with 'authentic Indian names', no doubt given at a three-day retreat, very uncomfortable.

Welcome to reality. The reality of forced sterilization, funded by the churches and government, and the the reality of children who were "rescued" to residential schools and force-fed Western culture. This book aptly exposes the hypocrisy and malaise affecting Christianity at this time.

It is only somewhat scholarly in style - compared to many such books, particularly Said's classic, this is an easy read. Enjoy even if it makes you squirm.
