Product Description

Album Description

While in the past Collins has paid tribute to his roots by covering some of his favourite songs, this marks the first time in his 30-year solo career that he has devoted an entire project to the work of other songwriters and performers. "It shouldn't really be a surprize to anyone that I've finally made an album of my favourite Motown songs," explains Collins. "These songs - along with a couple of Dusty Springfield tracks, a Phil Spector/Ronettes tune, and one by the Impressions - make up the tapestry, the backdrop, of my teenage years." "My idea, though, was not to bring anything 'new' to these already great records, but to try to recreate the sounds and feelings that I had when I first heard them. My intention was to make an 'old' record, not a 'new' record. To be able to have three of the surviving Funk Brothers play on all the tracks was unbelievable. There was one moment when they were tracking 'Heatwave' that I experienced a wave of happiness and wonder that this was actually happening to me! I learned more about production skills and the wonderful songwriting of those concerned whilst making this album, than I have from anything else. To those pioneers...much love and gratitude."

Album Description

Phil Collins presents his eagerly anticipated new soul album project 'Going Back' on September 13th, pre-ceeded by the release of the single '(Love Is Like A) Heatwave' on September 6th. 'Going Back' sees Phil Collins faithfully recreating some of his all time favourite classic soul gems, and features a tangible link to the past courtesy of performances from three members of legendary Motown session players The Funk Brothers - bassist Bob Babbitt and guitarists Eddie Willis and Ray Monette.

A deluxe edition featuring 25 Motown classics [and near classics], an additional 7 more than the CD only release. Plus there are an additional 4 tracks on the DVD.

In fact the DVD is the most surprising. Aside from the 4 extra tracks, the album is available as DVD audio [not DVD-A though], MP3 and WAVE formats. There is also a 90 minute documentary where Collins actually talks about the recording and mixing as well as two promo videos.

You see Collins in the dsocumentary playing the drums for the first time after his operations, seeing his kids help out in vocals and foot stomping, the Funk Brothers recording their parts [and the issues they faced] as well as other interesting tidbits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Motown & Phil my 2 favorite things in 1 !, Feb 16 2011
This review is from: Going Back (CD+DVD) (Audio CD)
Totally wicked. Even cooler watching the documentary going in to why they did everything to make the album possible. Only set back was Make Me Blue music video isn't on the DVD. The DVD does have an extended version of the album in high quality to transfer to your computer. Lots of bang for the buck. Phil really pulled a lot of strings to make this album the best it can be for music lovers.

As much as Phil Collins maybe vilified these days as an aging pop-artist, (His first two solo albums are awesome works; everything else, take it or leave it.) the man does love the Motown sound. Collins provides a strong compilation of his favourites, presented as strong performances. Overall, a fine piece of work. For the uninitiated, this is a great introduction to Motown by a true fan.
