1.0 out of 5 stars Shockingly Horrible Reproduction, July 7 2009

This review is from: Golden Age Starman Archives Vol. 2 (Hardcover)
I greatly enjoyed the first vol. of Starman and have a huge collection of the DC archives. In fact a nearly complete one. Something's gone terribly wrong with this edition. The trouble starts on the cover. The yellows look green. Inside is even worse. The pages looks like color xerox's of the original comic books. Blurry text. Horrible color. Blurry images. Clearly not an archive edition quality. Great disappointment.

After seeing this and the Kryptonite Nevermore volume of Superman from the DC Classics Library - which had similar problems, I'm not sure I want to buy any more of these collections from DC. Which is terrible because I love DC comics.

If you're thinking about buying this book. Think twice. You might want to spend it else where.

1.0 out of 5 stars DC ARCHIVES CRASH AND BURN!, July 16 2009
By The Great Oz - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Golden Age Starman Archives Vol. 2 (Hardcover)
I too own many archive editions, and I have to agree that by comparison to previous volumes, the Starman Archives Vol 2 is a disaster from front cover to back. If the argument is that this edition "looks more authentic" I must point out that I recently purchased The Batman Annuals from the DC Comics Classics Library. The contents are likewise printed on brown, pulp-style paper giving it a "more authentic" comics look. But unlike Starman, time was clearly invested in restoring the color balance and the print quality is good. It achieves the look of older comics and is quite acceptable.

My gripe with DC Starman Archives Vol 2 is that, 1) It breaks a long precedent, spanning many years, of printing these volumes on quality paper along with beautiful color reproduction. They were a pleasure to behold. This latest addition to the DC Archives no longer matches the rest of my library in terms of earlier quality and look. That alone is a disappointment. But if it only ended there!

2) My biggest gripe is that the color reproduction is shameful, to say the least! The scanning\printing process is fuzzy and the green-yellow shift running amok throughout the book from cover to cover is very annoying. Moons are awash in green-yellow, backgrounds are green-yellow, word panels are green-yellow, yellow portions of costumes (Starman's Logo and belt!) are green-yellow, etc. I KNOW the originals from the Golden Age were not colored thusly. I own some of them. This reproduction is so bad, I almost can't bear to read it!

It's very hard to imagine that an editor, other than just simply not caring about the quality, would approve this disaster. Doing so, demonstrates to me at least, a flagrant disregard for casual consumers and devoted fans alike. It's insulting, really. I might have forgiven the mismatching paper quality, but the color rendering and fuzzy printing is simply inexcusable. I suspect this fiasco will truly drive a final nail in the DC Archives coffin. I know I'll be very reluctant in the future to advance order anything similar from DC and will wait instead for the reviews to come in.

1.0 out of 5 stars RIP DC Archives, July 8 2009
By Charles Hutchinson - Published on Amazon.com

This review is from: Golden Age Starman Archives Vol. 2 (Hardcover)
I have enjoyed DC's various Golden Age Archives for many years, although in recent years, due to some company decisions, the output of GA material has waned. Which is odd, seeing as how Marvel's classic GA material has greatly increased. One would think DC would want to at least attempt to match Marvel, considering GA DC is seen as more "important" historically than GA Marvel/Timely.

When I saw that there would finally be a second volume of GA Starman I eagerly pre-ordered a copy from Amazon. When I saw that it was shipped I jumped up and down. When it arrived I rejoiced.

But...when I opened it, I threw up a little in my mouth. The reproduction on this archive is the WORST I have ever seen. I must say that most Archives I've seen have had great reproduction, so this book becomes a rather large blemish on the Archives' reputation.

I agree with all that the previous reviewer said about this volume. The problems definitely start with the cover. First of all, the image is ridiculous considering the prestige that fans think about when they think DC Archives. But the quality of the image gives the first indication of the horror to follow when the book is opened. When I saw the over-saturated yellow/green pages, the blatantly obvious use of the "fill" tool in Photoshop on the white areas of the covers (and yet this technique was only applied to the white areas, leaving the rest a muddied, blurry mess. Odd choice from Rick Keene, reproduction man for this volume)

If this volume is any indication of DC Archives to follow, then I fear the entire line will be doomed to destruction far sooner than DC had seemingly anticipated a few years ago.

RIP DC Archives.
